A positive first empression helps set the tone for the class. Helps the students to know what to expect.

I feel that setting the right first impression sets the stage for the whole class. It is hard to change their first impression.

You truly only have one first impression! I usually teach the courses in the middle of our program so students have formulated opinions about you before they step into your classroom. Your positive first impression can dispell negative preconceived notions, giving way to accepting the information you are about to share.

Judith,
You brought a great point, besides strong. Education is a "heart" business, so we should all not to forget to stick to the class policy and guidelines, but also show students we are here to help out with a good heart.

Hi Chuck,
Well said. By helping students to make the connection between the role model they have as an instructor and the field they are preparing to enter students can develop their soft skills to a much greater degree.

In order for students to take you and your course serious, you must show you are worthy of their attention. Dress professionally, arrive early, begin on time, and be prepared for anything. My lectures are all accompanied with a PowerPoint presentation, but more than once something has gone wrong either with the computer or the presentation. I always have hardcopies as backup. I was a marketer of 19 years before I became an educator. As a marketer if I was unsuccessful in making a good first impression, I lost a lot more than my students respect. I carry those lessons in to my classroom.

You only get one chance to make a first impression and that impression is lasting.
You must make it a positive one for you and the students.
If students perceive you as a professional and you can show them that you have enthusiasm to teach & you care about their Success, in turn they will trust you and give you the respect you need to run a great class !

A positive first impression is important to gain the students attention and respect. It lets the students know what to expect.

The first impression of an instructor is extremely important. Instructors should present themselves as leaders. Students need to know that will be in the hands of a competent, organized, and assertive instructor.

Hi Leo,
All great ways to set the tone for a class that the students will appreciate because they know the instructor has prepared for upcoming class and is ready to teach.

A positive first impression is critical for your teaching and also job interview. It is kind of setting the tune for your class.

Besides to prepare before the class, it is critical to arrive early and greet every student with a big smile to show your passion about the class. This also gives you an opportunity to observe your students and adjust your teaching strategy as needed. During the first class, you should introduce yourself and know better of your students. In addition, a well prepared course outline should provide information that students want to know and set the proper expectation.

A positive first impression sets the tone for the entire course. It is important for students to view the instructor as punctual, professional, and prepared.

A positive first impression is very important because people form an opinion about you within the first 7 seconds of meeting you. You want to be well dressed, prepared, professional, and open minded. You are going to be a mentor for your students, so they need to feel that they can count on you.

this wil help students to better understand whats to be expected in the field

It is very important to set the tone by letting the students know that you are concerned about them and how they learn.

It allows for a common understanding of what or rather how and what to expect from both.

TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE SHOWS THEM YOU ARE SEARIOUS ABOUT YOUR CLASS

In my case, I look much younger than I am. I think that it is important to establish a level of authority at the beginning of a new course. I do this by establishing guidelines for late assignements, attendance, and by making sure to "dress the part".

It is imperative to make a positive first impression because it will give the students a positive feel for the class and the instructor. It sets them up for success and gives them confidence.

Hi All,
In your various classes what type of setting, introduction or activity made the greatest first impression on you?
Thanks for you input on this discussion.
