A positive first impression helps to get the class on to a good start and students will be more receptive to learning and participating in class.
It's important to make a positive first impression, because you can't take back a negative one, student's will never forget, being positve an instructor will have a better outcome.
I want the students first impression of me to be that I love and know this topic and want to them to succeed. If they get that, it will set them at ease and set the tone for the course.
I usually wear a clean pressed lab coat with office clothes. Wearing nice professional clothes and acting in a professional manner sets the tone for the class and also gives the student an idea of how to be in a clinical setting.
I've played people bingo before and what are your expectations for the course and you are on a boat and are sinking and you only have room for three people on the life raft who would you take. I give them a list of people on the boat. Examples include a movie star, a priest, a pregnant woman, a doctor, a lawyer, a mother and child. That always get them thinking.
Hi Drieca,
I agree with you about the need to show your passion for your field. This really helps to get the students engaged in the course. They get excited because you are excited and that keeps them coming back.
Gary
you need to set the tone from day one, with both your expectations of the students and knowing what their expectations of you is.
I think it makes a student feel less apprehensive and willing to be a part ofthe course. You must also make sure that you are modeling the expectations of the school and the mission and vision that leads to credibility on the instructor and schools.
INTRODUCING YOURSELF, YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT THE FIELD OF STUDY YOU ARE TEACHING. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THE STUDENT KNOW YOU TEACH ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR!
Hi Keelan,
Spoken like an experienced educator. You are making great progress in setting the tone for your classes and controlling the management of classes. Your comments are good information for new instructors that are just getting into class management and wondering how to set the tone for the students.
Gary
Hi Sue,
So do I. I really like to use them in my classes. What is your favorite ice breaker?
Gary
Hi Sean,
You are a great example of a dedicated professional that wants to set the example for his students. This is so important as the students move through their education. They need to see models of behavior, dress and knowledge from individuals that represent their soon to be career area.
Gary
I think it is important because it sets the basis for who you are and where you came from and how professional you are. I also believe it will set a good role model for the students. I guess what I am trying to say is that they will be more inticed into what you have to say as the class goes on.
with me becoming a new instructor, it was hard for me to put my foot down, but after a few new classes, its become alot easier to handle a class after i showed them i was in charge and what i expect out of them as the class goes on throughout the course
I always start with an icebreaker so they get to know me and each other.
I am the type of person who leads by example. If I am late, out of uniform or not prepared then I am sending the message that this is acceptable behavior. I have higher standards for my self and my students so I must never deviate from this.
It gets the students and the teacher excited about the class.
Making a positive first impression is essential because it allows the student to because it not only shows students that the instructor is a professional and knowledgeable but it also alleviates some of the anxiety students feel on the first day of class.
Positive first impression tells the students about your personality as an instructor & how helpful you can be to let them achieve their goals
It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed.
With every new encounter, you are evaluated and yet another person's impression of you is formed. These first impression can be nearly impossible to reverse or undo, making those first encounters extremely important, for they set the tone for all the relationships that follows.
So, whether they are in your career or social life, it's important to know how to create a good first impression.
