It is important because you want your students to be excited about their course and keep them coming back every day. You also want to pump them up about succeed and help them get over their negative thoughts and previous experiences. You also want the students to feel comfortable enough to come to you for help.

It is very important and highly imperative than an instructor make a great first impression because the students are more willing to put forth their best efforts and place must vaunted trust in you as an instructor. Any breach of that trust would create a negative impression and result in a bad experience for the student and instructor.

I think that sounds like a wonderful idea. I am going to try that with my next new group!

agree, with all. making a difference

Positive first impression can be a good motivator for the unsure or anxious student. If they get the impression that they are on equal footing with other students, they may try and give a good effort to learning, even if it will be challenging.

An instructor can't make the students like them, because you can't please everyone. The instructor should focus on being approachable and fair. That's all I wanted from my instructors, even the ones I didn't like very much at all.

It indicates at the start that the class experience will be positive. This increases student expectations and anticipation.

It gives you an opportunity to model the expected behavior of your students.

Positive first impression is very important when starting a new class because if you dont give student a positive impression they won't look forward going to your class.

Positive first impression sets the tone immediately for the remainder of the course. If your students see you and the course as a combination they can work with - the likelihood of success will go up exponentially.

It does a couple of things: It open up the lines of communication, allow students to learn about themselves, peers, and instructor, shows the structure and leadership in the classroom.

It is important to make a positive impression to the students if you are the teacher, or to the teacher and your classmates if you are the student. Making positive impressions minimize stress and create a positive learning atmosphere. Excercise such as "Breaking the Ice' is an opportunity to express oneself and can be used in creating positive impression.

I am a firm believer in a first impression being a lasting one. So i believe you have to grab their attention from the very first moment you walk in the classroom. Make them feel comfortable and at ease from the start that way they will be willing to open up to you and you can get great feedback.

A good first impression sets the tone for the class. I like to share my " story" and then have students tell my how they got to where they are at in life.

A positive first impression allows the students to not only hear but see by example what your expectations are ... if you are on time, prepared and listen to questions and feedback they should feel comfortable about the class, expectations and their learning experience.

For students to know what to expect, that as instructor you are the leader and there to support and guide each student through this learning process. Your display will guide them in how to behave in your class, and above all the importance of respect for one’s self your peers and the instructor.

Hi Cynthia,
The key is to get the students settled into the course and feeling comfortable as you say. Sounds like you have a good plan for making this happen while supporting them from the very first day of class.

Hi Lillie,
Good points about positive first impressions. I can only imagine how stressful it was to have a course added at the last minute so preparation time was very limited. Sounds like as a true professional you were able to rally and make the best of it while still making a positive first impression.

Hi Sandra,
You give your students a balanced picture of you as an instructor. You let them see your professional side while also showing your human side. This is a nice blend because instructors are developing not only the knowledge base in students but the soft skills as well.

Hi Brittany,
Good points! All of them help to contribute to student engagement and enhanced learning. Confidence built is learning increased and this leads to higher levels of motivation just as you say.
