Hi Jan,
Good point and one all instructors need to remember.
Gary

Hi Andrew,
You make a very good point so we need to be very aware of the class composition as we approach it for the first time. This way we can focus on getting the students settled into the course and making them feel welcome.
Gary

I agree. You never get a seocnd chance to make a goof first impression. I believe that making a really good first impression really sets the stage the remainder of the course. Making a good first impression really established your integrity.

This first impression will create a standard within in the classroom. It will enable you to become credible and relevant in the eyes of the students. This will allow you a sense of authority and status within the class.

Your preparation allows for this good impression.

Clearly the presentation, content, preparation are all critical to the first impression. I believe the first impression is just that and while important a more vlauable impression is one that extends b/y the first 5 minutes....

A positive first impression is so important not only to show my students that I am a professional, but also to show them that their first impressions are going to make a big difference when they communicate with their clients in the real world.

I believe a first impression not only sets the tone for the students about you, but sets the tone for me about the students!

It sets the tone for the weeks to come in the class. You want to spark interest and ease anxiety on the very first day. The impression your students receive on day 1 impacts their attendance and wanting to be in class day after day, their attitude, their level of enthusiasm, etc. It's important for your students to receive a positive first impression!

Hi Anne,
Right you are. The positive first impression sets the tone for the upcoming class sessions. The positive first impression also helps to get the students comfortable and settled into the course.
Gary

Dealing with primarily non-Western students, positive first impressions can make or break a course. Working overseas quite often, your first impression sets the tone for not only your block of instruction but is crucial in developing rapport among the class and will even stimulate class participation.

It helps the students feel confident in your abilities to instruct them during the course.

If we do not give the students a good impression at the first class we will have lost our chance.

You are setting the tone for the entire course. If you set a bad example to start with it can be difficult to gain the classes respect going forward.

Hi John,
Right you are. This is much like the aroma coming from home baked bread while touring a house as a prospective buyer. Your brain is telling all kinds of good things about the home as a result of the wonderful smell coming from the kitchen. This is the same for a great first class session. It makes the students want to come back to see what will happen next.
Gary

I believe that a positive first impression creates a two advantages which benefit both the instructor and the student: it creates respect for the instructor, and it makes the student more receptive to the course itself. This leads to a more optimum teaching-learning environment.

Hello Doctor,

In addition to the worthy benefits mentioned in the instructional material, a good first impression can have a deep beneficial psychological effect. A strong first impression can produce endorphins resulting in a strong memorable experience and the desire to look forward to the next encounter.

Hi Allison,
What a great way to start a new class. You have the students interacting with each other, competing at games, and having fun learning. This really sets the class up for success in the coming weeks.
Gary

A postive first impression will put the students at ease. That way they know what to expect. You will also be serving as a role model for them throughout the course.

It sets the tone for the class. If you start off on the wrong fit it can be tough to get the class back. You may risk alienating some students and they may not come back.

i believe a positive first impression is the most important, this sets the stage for the duration of the course with the students, they will love you, deal with you or they may drop all together
