Games....hands on learning

I have a seperate syllabus for my students so they are aware of what they have to do for each class.

Hi Douglas,
Learners like variety and by using different mediums and deliveries you are offering them opportunities to use their learning preferences in acquiring the new knowledge. Good strategies.
Gary

I think that using popular media if appropriate as well as mixed methods of presenting information. Some lecture, readings, handouts, and a video all that support each other, keep the topic moving and appeal to various learning styles.

Hi Karen,
Good approach. Learners like variety so the more you can offer instruction in their different learning preferences the more they will retain the content.
Gary

I try to incorporate all styles to capture the different learner preferences, which includes verbal, hands on, and visual. By using this variety of styles it makes the class more interesting and creates an environment for learning.

Hi Beth,
Knowing student learning preferences really helps with instructional planning. How do you identify the learning preferences of your students?
Gary

Get to know my students and how they learn as individuals.By visual, auditory or tacitile and incorporate all these ways into my teaching techniques.

Hi Kanisha,
I would guess that this gets the students really involved in the learning process as you peak their interest in the topic being covered.
Gary

Hi Sunshine,
Great way to introduce variety to the learning paths of your students. This format keeps them interested and engaged throughout the duration of the class. Brains like change of pace and you are offering that with your methods.
Gary

Hi Catherine,
Good way to get a snapshot of your students and their learning preferences. I am sure this really helps you to target your instructional planning.

Here at our college we have a short quiz the students can take which help us know the different learning styles of the class. This is helpful information so that I can change up my lecture based on the respones from this quiz. If I have more visual learners I can incorporate pictures and handouts with my PowerPoints, if there are more tactile learners I can pull out the actual equipment so they can see how they work. Intermixing the various ways helps me to cover the different styles of learning.

I try to incorporate many different teaching/learning styles each day...

I may show a power point and lecture for the first half.

As things come up that I can show, I will bring items in or demo a topic.

Toward the end I may show a video to recap on the topic. Or, I have the class break into groups and have mini discustions/ role - play.

I also try to ask for questions at the end of each lecture and then again at the beginning of the lecture to next day. Sometimes it takes a little while for the students to digest the information.

I play show and tell. I show them something and then lecture about it!

Hi Sandra,
It is amazing to watch students put it together when they are able to take course content and make application. You are right about the motivation soaring. They see relevancy to their learning.
Gary

I teach dental lab. Students learn by manipulative measures. The lecture componet is taught by another instructor. I find that student comprehension soars when they actually do the lab tasks with their hands and this also helps them with their classroom examinations.

Students today want to know why what they are learning is relevant to their field. I have used the Internet extensively to show examples of why what I am teaching them is relevant. I also use the problem-based learning and case study learning to show this. Students need to understand how what they are learning will be applied in their future real world experience. I have found that my own experience is often not enough for students to get an handle on this.

Hi Tim,
Great way to show application and generate interest in the topic. I am sure this approach really generates a lot of discussion with the students.
Gary

Hi Jennifer,
Mini-lectures are selected segments of content that have a sense of accomplishment when completed. For example may you are wanting to cover definitions of terms. You cover the terms and definition in 15-20 minutes (keep in mind these are just rough estimates of time). Once completed you have a discussion, small group, game or other activity to reinforce the terms. Then you present another segment of content. You keep progressing through the class session this way. You are sharing content, making application, sharing content, making application, etc..
Gary

I try to add releavence
