I always try to show my students the importance of understanding and knowing the subject and how to apply it to practical life. I always tell them that the knowlege is a tool can be used to resolver different situations. I am giving examples of situations and how they can resolved with the knowledge gained. It seems to work.

It is important for them to see the application of book learning to actual job usage.

Based upon the material to be presented and the desired learning outcomes, I try to match those to the best instructional method(s) to achieve the objective(s). During the presentation, I try to remain alert to those who may be having a problem comprehending the material or performing the task and respond to those needs individually.

Hi Diane,
Good way to show relevancy to your students. This approach shows the students how they can apply the content they are learning to their future careers.

Hi Guillermo,
Thanks for sharing this great strategy for offering instruction on Excel use. These kinds of strategies are of real help to other instructors. I know they will enjoy using ideas like this.
Gary

Hi Guillermo,
That is what I call connecting the dots. You are drawing a picture in the minds of students by showing them how what they are learning will mean success to them in their careers. This is a critical learning step.
Gary

Hi Denise,
This is what makes your course content relevant and gives students insight into application of concepts. They see the value of the theory and book content to their careers.
Gary

Hi Victor,
You are right on with your instructional delivery strategies. Keep offering your students variety and change of pace as you share content. This will help to keep their interest high and their learning preferences in place. Also, be on the lookout for ideas you can incorporate in your instructional delivery. Things like learning groups, case studies, simulations, role playing, etc.. All of these strategies can be incorporated into your teaching.

I normally review the text and other material and add relevant experience of my own to the course content. students tend to appreciate this kind of course content

When planning I make sure to involve all the different learning styles such as providing powerpoints for the visual learners, asking questions and interacting with the thinkers and watcher, and even hands on for the student that learn by doing or actively participating.

I like to use current events in class. I start each class with a relevent current event. I try to vary them using local, national and world events. I find this stimulates great conversations perhaps on topics students had not considered as impacting their career choice.

I have used problem solving and group critical thinking question. I noticed when giving the student a real life scene and the tools but the answer to the question, they retain the content much better. Of course using different types of activities works best. One that I used a few weeks ago while teaching Excel to student is having a class break into 3 different groups all with the same goal create an Excel inventory sheet of the medical supply closet. In the inventory sheet needed to to be easy for any person to use. At the end of project they needed to share the end product of the team with the class. Every single Excel sheet look very different but all work the same. In the end they all learn a practical use for Excel and and learn skill that where in the course content.

I try to show student why they need to learn the subjects I am teaching them. Let it be the autonomic nervous system or Medical law, I deliver the content in a way that the student gets involve because it will be something they will need in the field. Is on thing when you tell a student you need to know chapter 2 for the test on Friday then you need you need to know chapter 2 if you want to get or keep a job.

Since I teach computer technology, I explain to the students that no matter what company they work for they will be using computers in some aspect of their job.

I do this also. It is important for them to see the application of book learning to actual job usage.

I like to bring in authentic material that relate to the course content. I teach Critical Thinking, I found that showing the film "Food Inc." was a great way to have the students critically think about their eating habits.

I make use of the media relevant to the material being taught. This makes the class much more interesting.

I try to provide a clear learning pathway for students. By that, I mean that I show them how each course they take in their basic academics lays the foundation for what they need to do in their specific career courses. Without the grammar and punctuation foundation I provide, they will be unable to perform and pass the requirements in their other classes. Everything works together and is essential.

In individual classes, I will also try to provide real-world examples for application of the rules I'm teaching. This can help students hear the context for what they're learning.

I also relate stories of students who return to audit these classes because they are unable to move forward in other aspects of their learning due to a lack of the basic foundational concepts. This often hits home to students who want to get it the first time and be able to move forward.

I've been paying attention to learning preferences lately, trying to find what works best. For me, it seems like listening a short lecture and then touching and asking questions about the parts works the best so far. I'm always looking for more ideas, though.

Example's of reimbursement and demonstrating the allowed amount, the contractual adjustments, the deductible and the coinsurance while calculating the total patient responsibility. Demostrating the math and calculations that are necessary with Medical Billing.

I teach medical terminology (Medical Language for Modern Health care) and with the course content I use the book, power points and have the students use connect (Learn Smart) (by Mcgraw Hill). I also tell experinces that I have had (medical related and using terminology) and give my expertise. I have taught many terminology class (both halfs) and have gotten great feedback from the students how all of it corelated ( book, power points, my experiences and telling my stories and how it is related to terminology and using connect (Lear Smart), plus the grades that my students have received in the past explains itself.
