I try and accommodate for the different learning preferences by including audio and visuals durring the lecture i also include time throughout the session for the students to practice what they have learned.

I like to break lessons up into smaller parts. It is easier for students to digest and gives them a break from regular lectures.

I agree. I use a lot of real life examples in the class as well as pictures, diagrams and hands on materials. I also like to break the class into small groups for discussion and brainstorming. Then we come back together as a large group and each group presents their data or ideas. I use props, overheads, drawings, powerpoints for key points....I like a lot of variety in the classroom.

Whatever class I am teaching, I try to let the students know how this class will relate to their chosen profession.

Hi Shametra,
Good strategy. This helps the content to be both relevant and applicable.
Gary

I always try to relate the content back to real life applications. If students can see the need for the material, it makes it easier to comprehend.

I have outlined the text book material in order to make the delivery easier to understand by the students.

I feel the same. It is easy to try to put too much material in one section of time.

There are so many creative ways to deliver your material to your students that incorporate different learning styles. I definitely use small groups, so students can communicate their idea and broaden their knowledge of the subject matter and recognize cultural differences. Also, I try to use a manipulative whenever I can, so students can apply what they have learned.

I use the knowledge and skills I acquired through training in the field, then compare an relate it to the content.

Hi Gayle,
All great ways to make it "real" for the students. These strategies are the key for good engagement throughout the course.
Gary

I try to keep up on current events every day. This way I connect the class content to something that may be of interest to the students personally.

The couse I am teching is about 60% lecture. during my lectures, I try to gauge class interactivity/ responses to my discussions and make room for modifying my delivery. Perhaps I will focus more on my visual aids or will incorporate additional relevant stories. I'm always concerned with tuning my students out, and I don't want to be percieved as just getting through the class.

First students need to read the assigned material. Then I lecture, assign hands-on activities for them individually; then some hands-on activities for them as groups; and lastly quizzes. Thereby, I am able to appeal to the visual, auditory and tactile learning styles in the same class session.

By implementing hands on activities such as dissecting, showing videos of real life documentaries, describing a patient example relavant to topic, drawing examples on white board and showing mini videos of the medical process.

Hi Donna,
All good strategies. The use of your own experiences really helps with keeping the interest of students. Students like to hear stories from the field because it helps them to connect their own lives with the career they are about to enter. This helps greatly with motivation.

Course must be based upon student's level of knowledge. It should be taken from the same text book the college has provided to the students if not then we should give handouts of the entire course to students. We should always make a checklist for basic things to be covered for the given course. we should keep ourselves updated about new techniques and theories so that we can make our student more competent.

Hi Gary,

My background is in the medical field and as I lecture I relate my own experiences and experiences of others that I have known in the field. When there is a computer room available, the students also explore and research topics that we discuss in class. I also create illustrations on the board and the students always laugh because they say the drawings look more like cartoons than anything else!

Hi Michhael,
I do as well. The more we can show relevancy and application to our students the more they will see the value of the course content.
