I try to utlize lecture with power points, white board examples and a "try it" section.
Stelian,
Great to hear about your implementation efforts. I wish you much continued teaching success.
Gary
Jeff,
That is what it is all about. The more the students can see themselves in the real world the more engaged they are going to be in their learning. Real world examples help this to happen.
Gary
Sandra,
Good strategies. Rote reinforcement is in many cases a forgotten learning method that really works, especially in areas where there is a need to acquire an extensive amount of new vocabulary.
Gary
Sharif,
Good point and one we need always remember as we plan our instructional delivery.

My class room setting is a hospital. Organizational skills and clear communication among the students, I and the staff is very important. The biggest challenge that we faced I believe is, personalities. With this in mind, I had to recognize which staff member would fit best with student. I am still running into this wall, but every negative has a positive. The positive is that student are not in clinicals to make friends, but to learn new techniques and sharpen their skills. Learning techniques plays an important part too. It is important to recognize how the student learns the best, and introduce that technique where it is most needed. I have a feeling that as the students learn, the instructors grow with them.
Have a good weekend Doc.
I implemented
I have students prepare executive brief on current event related to the subject. In addiditon I have the students share their brief with the class which create class discussion. I coordinate field trips and guest speakers related to the subject as well.
I utilize a multitude of methodologies in an attempt to reach all learning styles and promote "ownership" of the material. These strategies include know want to know, learned, cooperative learning groups, case studies, role playing, and many more.
I am a Librarian, my course with the students, and my main goal is to get a book in their hand so they can read. Reading is the key to knowledge. I am shocked at the way public schools have not educated students, some of which are not ready for college level work, as they can not read!
I use real world examples and describe why they are important.
I try to bring real world jobs and tasks the students will be expected to perform when they are employed and relate them to the information we are covering in class. Sometimes I compare different skills required in everyday activities with what we are doing or covering in class when I can. By showing them that they are learning something they are already doing or something very similar to what they already know how to do it increases their confidence and helps them to pay more attention to what is being taught.
My course is equal parts lecture and lab. This allows for many approaches to learning. I use power point with coordinated handouts so that there is minimal notetaking which allows for better listening. Lots of opportunities for hands on learning in the lab.
Most of the course content is contained in Powerpoint presentations in the classroom and demonstration and hands-on practice in the lab. Because so much Powerpoint is mandated, I like to begin each lecture with a brief open discussion about issues that arise. This helps me to understand what the students may not have absorbed and their concerns, and to offer solutions before problems become intractable.
During the lecture, I paraphrase the slides and add personal anecdotes from my own experience. I also like to call on students randomly for comment to keep them alert and involved.
I begin each lab with a learning objective for that day, a protocol for achieving the objective, and a demonstration. I then circulate among the work stations, observing, commenting and, if necessary, again demonstrating. Reinforcement and encouragement is a very important part of what I try to do to get the students to believe in their ultimate success.
I use a lot of rote reinforced learning. Open and closed ending questions. Demonstrations
I would work on the course and prefer to teach the same course/curriculum in different formats. As it does not matter how good you are at teaching, at the end of the day if it does not contribute to student learning, then all efforts are wasted.
I try and use a good mix of lecture, media, and hands-on during class so that I can pretty much accommodate the various learning styles of my students. I also let them know that I understand there are various learning styles and preferences, so if they are not getting something to let me know, so that I can change up a little to address their particular learning style.
Course content should be relevant to help students achieve the goals/objectives of the course.
Instructors need to be creative in planning for instructional delivery.
Think back to the training you received and how it was delivered. Use the most effective methods that helped you acquired your competencies.
I incorporate handouts, PowerPoint presentations, video clips, and real world examples into the classroom to ensure that I am able to reach everyone based on their learning style.
We should be able to accomadte all stlyes of learning.
Lay out a plan that includes all. The lecture with simple drawings for example helps tremendously.
Sometimes pulling up the computer and even going to youtube.com to show them videos after a lecture helps with anatomy and physiology.

I always ask what career areas my students are studying for, and from that information I can apply our subject area to the students' needs.
