Students get a chance to find their strengths and weaknesses.

Hi Therese, Yes, it can be so encouraging for students to actually see the "before and the after". They really "get" how much their hard work paid off. Susan

self-assessment is very powerfull tool that involves the capacity of the student to identify where the mistake is made and to learn from it...

I think it's a good idea prior to starting a particular class and at the end. This shows their knowledge or thoughts prior to taking the course and what they have learned after the course. They will be able to recall some of the questions they may have been unsure of at the beginning, and as the class progresses learn the answers. I also tell them at the beginning assessment of knowledge that I'm just checking there current knowledge of the material and that I do not expect them to know all the answers. I let them know that by the end of the course they will know the material and take a post assessment.

By allowing students to assess themselves, you can gain an accurate picture on where they see themselves going on the learning path. Sometimes the student's assessment and the teacher's assessment vary greatly, and by having something to compare, teachers can evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching style.

HI Janell - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, students really need that frequent feedback to monitor their progress. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Adult learners are generally goal related and need to see they are progressing in their learning process. Self evaluations help they keep on target in order to reach their goals.

Hi Susan - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that it is so important to help our students decide what their strengths and interests are. They are making decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Alvin - Thanks for your post to the forum. You very succinctly stated the benefits of student self assessments. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Students can use these self assessments to figure out what skills they have for career goals and what type of career they should go into. This is important for determining what type of college major they should take and what direction they should go when entering college. For example if a students scored high in math then perhaps they might want to study in business and accounting or something like that.

Self assessments can be used as learning tools by
informing students of their primary learning styles and how they prefer to learn. This knowledge can help students understand why they may have had difficulty in the past and better understand themselves to enhance future learning.

Using self-assessment learning tools helps the student evaluate the amount and level of learning they have achieved.

I instruct at a career college. Students taking the clinical programs have "check offs" in which they prove to instructors they can do vital signs or draw blood or place ECG leads. The students are entering a field that is very "hands on" so by using the self-assessment the instructor see what the student is able to do and the student realizes his/her abilities as well. As a patient I see these students as potential healthcare providers and I want them to be confident and competant in their skills

Many of the students are either returning students or even students who feel they did not progress as well in school as they hoped. The self-assessments gives the student instant assessment in private, which can lead to areas improved.

Hi Sherrie- Thanks for your post to the forum. I'm glad that you have enjoyed this course. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

incorporating quizzes into classroom activities

Hi Kendall- Thanks for your post to the forum. Self-assessments allow students to see their progress for themselves. It avoids the "He gave me a "D" " scenario. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Self-assessments are great tools for both students and teachers to gage goals and acheivements.

I sometimes go to a student one on one and discuss our class time, activities, how they feel about what they have and/or haven't learned. My goal is to see if they feel they are where i believe they are, and how I might can try a few other ways to help further their understanding.
