Especially in a class of adult students, this exercise will initiate some form of togetherness among individuals who are " already set in their ways" It will also relieve the stress these students will be experiencing
What a great way to break the ice with students. It helps student interact among one another. It will help students learn different ways to interact with different situations and people. I will give this a try my next class.
billie,
this is a great point & idea as it really helps us to identify with each of our students.

Try to place yourself in each students learning behavior will also better facilitate the lesson.
I would love to use this with a cooking competition team. I can see how this has the potential to get them engaged in finding the solutions they need for break down obstacles to success and learning.
This exercise in some way gears to every multiple intelligence.
This exercise would give all those participating an opportunity to have fun, as well as, create in them, a little competition to be the winning team. I think it would also create a sense in all students participating the need to accomplish all seven of the Multiple Intelligences, as it is part of the game.
Interpersonal - The students must work with others to locate the students that will complete their team.
Logical/Mathematical - There are a specific number of steps that must be arranged in a specific order.
Spatial/Visual - The students arrangement is visual.
Musical - The instructor plays music during the exercise.
Linguistic/Verbal - The steps are probably written and the search for the other steps will include verbal interactions.
Intrapersonal - The students start working by themselves until they get a team started.
Bodily/Kinesthetic - The students must arrange themselves in a specific order.
Emotional - It can be emotional if you have some very competitive team members that want to win the prize.
Diversity plays a major role in discussions because it helps the students grasp what you are teaching
Mike,
tough question to answer. First thing would be to ask, are you sure they need help? Meaning, sometimes we assume they need help since they aren't speaking up, but really they're doing fine. Other than that, it may be trying to chat with them alone to encourage that interaction & encourage them to open up.

What do you do with students that dont ask questions so you dont how to help them .
Maria,
and this helps our students learn to listen to & value the opinions/perspectives of others.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
I agree. Each person can bring something different to the classroom. Different points of view can actually help students understand a concept that may be confusing.
Marianne,
yes, the emphasis on diversity is a great reason to use groups & a great byproduct.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
By showing diversity in people with having them also teaching each other something new.
We have the visual for all that are looking to see what the others are doing, while hearing them and the music. Interpersonal, completing individual task. Thinking of the urgency and importance and moving around the room forming groups and recognizing stress while doing all this. someone has probably taken command of each group giving orders and trying to win the prize.
Cheryl,
and the ability to see things from differing perspectives & ideas is a great skill.
