frank,
yes the team building can be a great way to promote self-assessment.
Dr. Ryan Meers
team building propergates self acessment to become more focused or creative on an idea.
this is a great way to see the difference between students and what they may have trouble with. it is also a great way to see how the class interacts with each other.
Teamwork is the best you can find the students strengths and weakness
It is Interpersonal because it involves working with others.
It is Logical/mathematical because proper order is an important goal.
It is Spatial/Visual because people are moving in order at the end
It is Musical because of the background music from the instructor
It is Verbal because students read the steps on the list
It is Intrapersonal because each student has their own step to think about.
It is Kinesthetic because of the students moving around
Brian,
yes & I think very reflective of the real work environment.
Dr. Ryan Meers
The basic premise to bring together a random group of people to create a team, this will hopefully bring in all different types from the multiple intelligences... Team work will be the key to the success of the group, utilizing the strengths of each trait.
Sean ,
yes the diversity in our classes needs to be understood & embraced.
Dr. Ryan Meers
This was a tougher one for me to figure out. I had to give it some thought for a while.
Intrapersonal and existential would be first when the student thinks about the assignment and starts putting it together. Logical as he figures out exactly how to approach people and what he wants to say.
Interpersonal, kinesthetic, musical and verbal will all be part of putting the plan together and making it successful. Well actually the music is all the time during the exercise, might be fun, annoying or both.
Emotional would come in with the stress at planning out a successful strategy and then the relief with completion and possibly joy if their team wins. Naturalist may or may not apply depending on the environment of the exercise.
This exercise is intriging.
Diversity in groups should not be over looked. The more divers the group the richer the discussion. I have found diversity leads to discussion that is critical expanding the groups knowledge. I teach classes that usually have students from other countries and they bring up points that an only U.S. class would never consider.
Cheryl,
yes it really reaches that wide variety of learners.
Dr. Ryan Meers
The reason this would work becsause it touches on every type of students that could be in the classroom setting.
Not only will the students likely find this activity fun, but it will teach them to work as a team with others that they may or may not know! Because of the fun environment this would create, the objective that is met by this exercise will probably be retained by the students.
Kathleen,
you are right that much of it rests in the presentation.
Dr. Ryan Meers
The way the activity is presented allows the use of all. It helps the students team build. They get the opportunity to begin to learn eachothers strengths & weaknesses.
Teresa,
yes this activity really can incorporate all seven.
Dr. Ryan Meers
This is a more thoughtful question. I do believe however that most if not all seven will be or could be used in this activity.
Interpersonal would be used simply because they would be communicating with each classmember until they have found the four that fit and to discuss the order.
Intrapersonal would work here without a question. The student(s) would use their own knowledge (self talk) to locate the other students and critically think during the group activity
Lingqustic/Verbal, simple they will speak with others.
Musical- fun, fast, and frantic. Even though I am not sure why this type of song would be used it still hits musical for the simple fact that all hearing students would hear the music during the activity which might help speed up the students response times.
Finally Logical/Mathematical- Strategies will be used to think of the correct order to be in during this activity.
Many people form their first opinios of the classroom as they walk in; and it sticks with them for the rest of the semester; it is up to the instructor to change it from time to time to keep it lively.
Of the seven MI, we can apply intrapersonal when a person recognize the stressful situation. The person will use interpersonal when communicating with the rest of the group and make use of logic when the group thinks of the urgency to eliminate stress and the importance of reducing stress on the right time. When the group recognizes the stress, they can use the kinesthetic by practicing 10 deep breaths. I am not sure if fast frantic music will help them manage the stressful situation.
The exercise stresses both teamwork and having the individual place themselves in order as part of the team, so interpersonal, intrapersonal, and logical intelligences are stressed. Taking place in a large room where students have to locate each other stresses spatial, and music adds to auditory awareness. Visual may be emphasized by identify each member of the same group by assigning them a specific color?
