1. Interpersonal- working as a team.
2. Logical/Mathematical - specific rules are given.
3. spatial/ visual - students arranging themselves in proper order.
4. Musical – classroom music.
5. Linguistic/ verbal – communication between students.
6. Bodily / kinesthetic –Students arranging themselves in order.
7. Emotional – turn exercise into a game with a prize.
I agree. Classrooms today hold diverse populations and if managed effectively, a great deal can be learned by all.
James,
this is a great synopsis of this exercise & how it applies to the classroom.
Dr. Ryan Meers
Kinetic is catered to by the movement involved in the exercise.
Musical by the music being played durring the exercise
verbal/linguistic by the students communicating with each other about their rolls in the 5 step process
Logical by needing to order the 5 steps once found
visual seems less touched on
Interpersonal communicating and working together with other students
Intrapersonal very weak
Very true. Diversity adds so much to the learning and classroom environment.
Students have to engage all their Intelligences in order to discover who the other students are that complete their team. Each student will possess individual characteristics that will make them display the Intelligences differently, but it will demonstrate how individuals may perform in a workplace. It will show why we have successful teams and workplaces and not as productive work environments depending on the individuals you put together and how quickly they are able to relate and work together.
Aaron,
yes, these activities really help all learners to appreciate the contributions of others.
Dr. Ryan Meers
Yes, here I think that they all will begin to see what each can contribute and hopefully they continue to build on it to bring complete understanding and full utilization of the groups potential with respect to the multiple intelligences.
Robert,
it can be somewhat challenging. The idea is that the different aspects of the exercise would allow the students who are stronger in the various intelligences to utilize those strengths & really speak to those abilities.
Dr. Ryan Meers
I am not certain how this exercise would allow me to map the various intelligences. Perhaps you could explain further. I do see how this is a great way to teach students to identify stress as well as gives them a means to process their stress and refocus on the task at hand.
Diversity is a important point to remember when teaching adult learner.Every one is unique. So insteat of repeating same technique of teaching one should try different method.
- Interpersonal-talking with students one on one to find out who the other people are in the group.
- Intrapersonal- they would have to use there own reasoning to find the other students they needed to find for the activity.
- Linguistic/verbal-communicating with other students to do different steps of the activity
- spatial/visual- arranging themselevs in order, reading the direction and wroting them down on paper, putting everything together
- Musical-the music playing while the activity is going on.
- Logical/Mathematical- figure out how to do the task, putting the steps in order 1 to 5, the couting of 10 deep breaths
This would demonstrate teamwork, following directions, having fun, exercising and being rewarded for a job well done.
Intrapersonal, because I believe the student has to come in terms of himself and figure out which of the five is his best area. Interpersonal, because he has to relate to others and find the right students that will work best in the other areas. All other types of multiple intelligence can be worked out in this exercise like creative thinking, etc.
This exercise is designed to support seven of the MIs. Visual/spatial intelligence is supported as the learners are asked to order themselves based on their lists. Logical/mathematical is supported as the learners must deduce what other skills are needed in addition to theirs, where they fit in/where to go, and what is the logical order. Further, the collaboration and communication that must exist among the learners supports the interpersonal and linguistic/verbal intelligences. As the learners move around within the learning environment they are engaging in bodily-kinesthetic activities. The facilitator provides the musical background for the musical intelligence. Lastly, as the learners engage in the initial dissection process of the assignment, they are utilizing intrapersonal intelligence. Some may have to internally address issues such as shyness and overcome any negative self-speak which may prevent their success at this task. This, too, would tie in to emotional intelligence.
Lynn,
yes & this is a great skill to learn as it is often used in the work environment.
Dr. Ryan Meers
I agree with this comment. With the task at hand, no matter the type of learner/intelligence etc., you will have a number of different responses. Working as a team each individual will be required to consider others and try to come to consensus of a solution.
Chad,
nothing can replace the value of an observant instructor who puts those observations into actions. Great job.
Dr. Ryan Meers
I watch closely at my students strengths and weaknesses and build from them .
The class is involved learning to work as a team, there is a set goal and the music helps to build the excitment to be the winning team, students are interacting and because there are only 5 items on the list it is easier to break down and the learning process is enhanced because the list comes to life as each student puts all the points together.
