Hi George,
I agree! The student spends the bulk of their time with the instructor. The instructor should be able to pick up on signs when the student is potentially a retention problem, however I have seen where no signs were given, and the student just fell off the face of the earth.

Patricia Scales

The instructor is with the student for the most part of his or her day and stands the best chance of retaining the student.

Hi Timothy,
I agree! Everyone plays a vital institution when it comes to helping the students succeed.

Patricia Scales

Hi Thomas,
You have it! It takes a village to help our students. It is everyone's responsibility to help look after the student.

Patricia Scales

The key players should be anyone in any department that directly interacts with the students ie; Education, admissions, financial aid ....ect. They all need to show that they are willing to help the student with their needs and make it feel like it's not a burden. They need to show that they care.

Everyone that is involved with there education is a key player. sometimes just the instructor alone is not enouigh to keep the student enrolled.

Hi Charles,
Wow, your modules turn over quickly! You really have to be on your A game with retention. It takes the work of all to work retention.

Patricia Scales

THe key players at my institute are the instructors. We have a large burden to care when it comes to the students retention. We change our students every 3 weeks and trying keep up with them takes a few days to adjust. In some cases that is enough for the students to loss focus.

Hi Elizabeth,
Nicely stated, and you are definitely on point! Instructors must be able to sell the student on returning the next day.

Patricia Scales

The key players are most definitely the instructors. A student will spend more time with the instructor than with any other person that works at any campus.

Instructors have a demanding role. They are responsible for this population. They must be able to share knowledge as well as motivate, inspire, and challenge the student body. It is by no means an easy job, but by far one of the most important roles.

Hi Paul,
You have to make students excited about coming back each day! Make students want to continue to come to school by sharing your enthusiasm, professionalism, caring ways, and knowledge base.

Patricia Scales

First and foremost is the student themselves. It is our own ability to overcome adversity, and follow through with our commitments that define us as students. Next would be the instructor. I want to give my students reasons to continue. After that comes support services offered by the school.

Hi Wilmer,
I concur! Even other students have affect on each other, good or bad.

Patricia Scales

I think every person who has contact with a student has an influence on them. Some may be positive and some may be negative but we all have some affect on that student.

Hi Cheryl,
I have learned that a lot of our students do not read. They want the instructor to give them what they need. Our students really need to do a better job of holding to their responsibilities. It goes without saying that the instructor must be fully prepared.

Patricia Scales

I think that the key players are both the instructor and the student. The interaction between the instructor and student, and the instructor and the whole class is important. The instructor should maintain an open and positive learning environment and encourage questions and give feedback. The students must engage the instructor and be prepared for class by completing required reading. Many times, the students have not prepared adequately for class, and the instructor may have a difficult time engaging the individual students in class discussion if the student is not prepared.

Hi Samuel,
I love your attitude and perspective! You said it simply and truthfully! I can tell you genuinely care about your students.

Patricia Scales

David,

I'm in 100% with you on this. I tell my students that they are all in a seat like I once was and I care about their progress. I tell them they are always welcome to talk to me and sometimes I coach them in life as well where needed. I have built a solid reputation with all of my students and I treat all of them like I like to be treated and it has given me awesome results! I always give positive feedback even in the worst situation and have changed many negative outcomes.

Hi Debbie Kay,
It certainly is a team effort! It is everyone's responsibility to help with retention.

Patricia Scales

I feel it is a joint effort. One department builds upon another. Intructors can be the first line of defense because they may interact daily with students and can readily recognize a need or change in a student.

The instructor can then bring in the aid of an advisor and/or career services. In the same way, the advisor/career services may need to enlist the help of the instructor to reach out to a student or follow-up or back up counseling.
