Hi DaNae,
How do you feel students benefit from being shown examples?
Patricia
so they know what to expect, in class
YES! They sometimes don't know the real difference.
I like showing examples of student work so they know where the bar has been set. They then make it a competition to try to beat out the previous score by doing a better job.
I think this really gives them a clear understanding of what you expect out of them. Some students also need that "extra" direction and are very visual so if you show them an example of what you want they are more likely to produce a quality product.
Showing an example of a model student assignment clarifies expectations about what constitutes excellent work and shows students what may be achieved.
They benefit from getting an idea of what could be used
True. We think alike. It isn't te scare them it is to show them how far they can go. I think it is the greatest motivator! Peg
That is true but the main thing is to get them aexcited about it. What better way then to show them success of those that were in the class before them!
Hi Joseph,
How do you feel students benefit from being shown examples?
Patricia
It helps them "see" where the course will be going and the expectations for their performance.
I agree!
I do this in my Business of Massage class. The students are expected to create a business plan. By showing them "the good, the bad, and the ugly" it helps them get an idea of what not to do and what they should strive for.
I teach a capstone class in Networking. Showing the accomplishments of the classes before them, truly excites the new class of students. It allows them to see how far they can actually go with the project. They finally are able to bring all of their classes together. Showing the work of the other students tells them it can be done.
The project also becomes real, tangible, instead of an abstract thought. This is virtual verses real and that is why sharing past classes with new classes works in my class! Peg
Yes it was, I white out past names of students and let them view the work in their groups.
In my area its critical, becaus its importent to teach students to follow directions. When teaching students cooking, a demo of a recipe clarifies the written information.
I have a lot of students who lack confidence and need a little reassurance. Showing them the finished product answers a lot of their questions ahead of time.
Some learners need to see examples to have a clearer picture of what is expected. At the same time, I think that instructors need to be careful about this because it may interfere with the creativity and opportunity for students to do something better.
Hi Robert,
Wow, I like it! You really go above and beyond. I am sure your students appreciate this type of thorough sharing. This tactic really makes things clear for your students, and I am certain you get minimal complaints. Super!
Patricia
Hi John,
I understand. I keep an example of a portfolio as well. Students like to be able to see something. Visualization makes it alot easier for most students.
Patricia
Hi William,
Yes. Students get a sense of confidence...if they can do it, then I can do it! The goal seems real and attainable.
