It can make it easier for the student and yourself as the instructor. By showing an example you are letting the students know the difficulty level of the course, layout you desire, and what is expected to recieve a good grade. This will make grading easier and students won't do more or less work than is required.

Hi Allen,
Students want to get some ideas as to how the end result should appear. It is even better when they can see an example as well as how the assignment would benefit them in the work place.

Hello Catherine,
Visuals are helpful in this way too. I always tell my students to be very thorough when in doubt.
Patricia

Hi Michael,
You're right. The student's name should never be revealed, whether the grade is good or bad.
Patricia

Hi B. A.,
Students need to see it. We should not leave it up to imagination.
Patricia

It gives them a realistic idea of what your expectations are for the work that you require and doesn't leave the requirement up to their imagination!

I will show a student lab pages if they are what i am looking for to show the rest of the class what they should be shooting for I never reveil the students name on the work

I think the biggest thing that I hear from students is that they don't know how detailed (or not detailed) they should get when it comes to their work. By providing them wtih a visual, it helps lessen their anxiety and fear that they may have missed (or not missed) something. Thanks!

By showing examples of work the class has a better idea of the content requirements.I like to explain how each area would relate to the workplace to give the activity importance in thier developement.

Hi Jimmy,
Showing examples tend to make things clearer for students. It also puts students at ease.
Patricia

Hi Jimmy,
It is extremely helpful to show students examples of work. Your real creative students will take the shown example to a totally different level. The example helps everyone.

Hello MeLinda,
Wow, it is amazing how students can interpret words! There favorite, "Oh I thought you said/meant....Great response, MeLinda

Hi Darla,
I love sharing examples with my students. Seeing is believing.

Hi Laura,
My child is in honors biology, and the instructor normally includes a rubric or at the least instructions. I believe firmly that students need guidance.
Patricia

Without an example students are left to their own imagination as to what you want. I can tell you from experience they will come up with a multitude of different versions of your written and oral instructions, unless they have an example to guide them.

Hi Joannie,
Whenever possible it is always good to show examples. I show three different grade levels, excellent, average, and failing.
Patricia

It is important for students to know what the instructor is expecting and to provide an example of exemplary work. Students have varied levels of acceptable work, and it is best to demonstrate than assume students know the level of acceptance.

It is helpful for students to see examples of the work they will complete because it demostrates the level of performance. I believe it is always acceptable for students to go above and beyond my expectations, but it is not OK to submit less than acceptable work. When students see the examples, they know the standard that is expected. The examples also provide a validation or clarification for the students of what is required. A student may read about an assignment and create a different visual in his mind compared to what is expected. Providing examples puts everyone on the same page.

As an aside, my son who is in an honors 8th grade science class was recently tasked with doing a science fair project. When I asked him if he received any handouts or rubric to guide his efforts, he replied that he had not. I am not sure if the instructor is expecting his class to already know how to produce a science fair project or if he is trying to see what his honor students produce without any guidance. I have instructed my son to ask his teacher for some direction on the topic. I am interested in hearing what he has to say.

I agree with the reasons that others have given--that is helps students better understand the course and assignment expectations. By providing a tangible example of what they should submit for a particular assignment, students can better focus their efforts. Some students become more motivated in the course because they now understand what they can accomplish in the course.
Making sample student works available on the portal at the start of the course helps because students can refer to those examples.

I think it is helpful to show students example of the work they will be doing so that they have a concept of how to approach the task. Although each of us can be a little creative, we need to ensure that the student has the background to complete the task as required.
