I believe it has a calming effect to see examples of what the finished product should resemble. This relaxed state of mind will help them learn and retain more
Hi Shametra,
Students need as much clarity as possible when they have been given an assignment. They are more motivated to do the assignment whenever they fully understand what is expected of them.
Patricia
Hi Kerri,
Students love having a visual to go by! Visual adds clarity.
Patricia
This gives students a clear understanding of what's expected of that assignment by giving them clear visual example.
I agree. I have a different instructional style than most of the instructors at my college. I have seen other instructions use the style and failed with it. I think Academic Freedom is a great thing. I don't believe I would be as effective if I were restricted to a certain way of doing things.
Student has something to look forward to with their upcoming course
Agreed, Gina! This is critical in maintaining the standard and enforcing the standard. It is challenging for students to meet the standard if they don't see what they are aiming for.
I believe that teacher modelling and/or student samples are both acceptable ways to show what is expected prior to the assignment being completed. Once the work is done, showing great student work really does wonders to celebrate the individual(s) that really met the standard.
Because it allows the students to see how they have to present the work and what it is expected from them. Examples in many cases also clarify intructions reducing any misunderstanding students may have about the work
Students should have an idea of what is expected and the high quality work of other students.
Hi Jumana,
We have to make it clear to our students what the expectations are so that they do not go on false pretenses.
Patricia
To set expectations and in my class, how it will apply in the work setting.
The students know what is expected froom them. They get engaged and excited about the class and since emotions are involved then teaching and grasping the contents of the coarse gets easier.
It is hellpful inform them so they know what to expect. You want them to have a heads up on the subject matter. It allows them time to prepare the material before they start the upcoming course.
I think this is a good idea to the extent of knowing why you got tyhe grade you did however I prefer to show them only A grades to set the bar where they need to be.
sets the bar for their work
I like to present examples of work to students for several reasons. First, it helps to explain the requirements of the assignment or project beyond the book or handout. When students can see examples in action it can open up their understanding of the material. Another reason can be what I think of as the “cool factor”. I am a (SME) in computer applications MS Office and the like. When I can show examples of assignments/projects to students beforehand like an Excel app, an interactive PowerPoint slide show, a good looking resume etc. and the students think “I want to be able to do that.” Then I have that student locked in on the assignment.
Showing examples gives the student both what they need to accomplish in the class and also my expectations from them. When I show examples, I explain how I grade the task in addition to what they need to do.
Hi Deanna,
Showing examples really does generate a lot of excitement and motivation. It also adds clarity.
Patricia
It gets them engaged and excited about the course. I find that it also helps them to decide if this is really a career they want to persue. Some students enroll in a program only because they want to make the salary graduates of the program are able to make and they have no idea what the job is or what they will be doing. This is a great time to make sure that they are entering into a career that they really want.
To get them thinking about the up coming course, and to get them excited for the material they are about to learn
