Showing examples of student work

Why is it helpful to show your students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course?

As a Graphic Design instructor, examples of student work can provide clarity in images where words tend to fall short.

Hi Marie-Anne,
Examples really make the light bulb come on for a lot of students. They understand the assignment better because they can actually see what is expected of them.
Patricia

I also think this is effective. It opens up their eyes if they are at a mind block.

Hi Yowanda,
Students tend to get it better when they can see the finished product. Great clarity is added when examples are shared with students.

I show students examples from previuos students so they have a "vision of expectation" as well as creativity. I want the students to use critical thinking as well as creativity and in the process learn from the project.

Hi Patricia,
I would like to add as well so that they know WHAT they are doing.

Unfortunately at our organization, its hard to know what his or her next class be. but I do ask some if he or she does know what is next class section. I try to enlighten as much as I can, so they can prepare or have an idea. Some students do ask is an easy or hard class. If I have taught that same class section, then I can be honest, but depends on the instructor.

so they know how they are doing

It is very helpful when imaging students who completed the program and externship perform and present clinical cases in front of beginners. Students usually ask a lot of questions about the future in the profession and what’s required by the facilities.

One of the best reasons to show students examples of work they will be doing in a course is to provide relevance. Students who can see how the coures will help them in their careers will be more motivated to learn. This action will also help them feel prepared for the course and remove some of the worries they may be having about the course load.

They will have a clear objective of what is expected

It set expectations for the assignment and what is expected for the course. Also, it can be used as a visual aid for the student to use in completing their assignment.

Hi Patricia,
Students are motivated by being shown an example as well. They become more ready to begin the project after seeing an example.

I do try to show examples of student's work--but sometimes others might take it--if he or she done his or hers wrong. I do try to tell students that there is no right or wrong--everyone has different way of thinking or visualizing in his or her own head of the subject matter. I will go with the flow to see the wonderful ideas students have!! Love it!

I like showing what is expected in the class subject. It enhances students of what they are going achieve.

Hi Jerry,
Students tend to feel a lot more secure knowing that they are on the right track.
Patricia

Hi G.,
I make sure to include the objectives of the subject on the syllabus, which is given out on Day 1.
Patricia

all student should get an outline of the objectives for the subject

Showing examples of student work will not only help the students understand what is expected of them, but can also serve to show the students what it is that they don't know. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is overconfident students who are held back because they don't know what needs to be learned next since they don't know what they don't know.
