I like to find out what where students are in life and where they plan to go. I then like to discuss how the courses they are taking with me are the vehicle used to get them there and the adventure of the "ride" that awaits is nothing like reaching the destination.

Hi Julie,
Super! Students love hearing about personal experience that is applicable to the real world. I like to make mention of the potential income in their field every opportunity I get. I also like bringing in classified ads as they pertain to the students field.

I use power points, handouts, and personal experience. I discuss in great detail each of them in an interesting manor, also in a way that the students can understand.

Without getting into detailed specifics about what/where I teach, I will use video examples of the subject we are about to undertake or use physical/visual aids to break the ice. These techniques has shown to work well in our teaching environment.

Hi Molly,
I love how you take the new students under your wing and make the experience on the first day very warm and welcoming. Students will continue to come back the next day if they feel at ease.

I teach utilizing the "wheel method". This can create anxiety for new students so we meet with them while they are in their gen ed section (prior to joining our class). We make sure we comfort them and make them feel welcome so the first day is not so intimidating.

Hi Brendon,
When we speak in monetary ways to our students, they tend to get motivated/excited.

Hi Phyllis,
I have discovered that things are more simplified for students when we as instructors take the time to connect the dots. The students have a better understanding of it all.

Patricia Scales

I typically use examples of how many people I have met in the field that knew nothing about this course's content and explain that the students monetary and marketability surpasses them just by attending this course

Provide brief broad overview of the course content as it relates to ability to function in the field. In my case why the topic is relevant to effective patient care in nursing. Then I identify each topic area to be discussed. I always initiate from the general to the specific. Connecting the "dots" of information enhances the ability of a nurse to demonstrate effective critical thinking.

Hi Mark,
We need to do as much as we possibly can to keep our students motivated. Motivation will keep them coming back the next day!

Patricia Scales

I agree, helps very much with motivation.

Hi Carol,
Absolutely! I like to be proactive and let the students know at the beginning of Day 1 why they need the course without them even asking.

Patricia Scales

Hi Bola,
What a great question to poise to generate good discussion.

Patricia Scales

The students have to see that taking the course will help them with there careeer goals. The student have understand why they need the course.

At the begining of the course, i usually ask each student about they know about the subject and how their understanding of how the course relate to their career goal. This usually gets a good conversation among the students and also assist me in determining the tone of the course and use some of their information through the length of the course.

Hi Beverly,
Students like it when we make learning applicable to the real world.
