Hello Patricia
The sharing of examples with students “…of work they will be doing in the upcoming course†serves a variety of purposes. First, it provides the student a framework and point of references with regard to class expectations. Second, this can reduce anxiety of the unknown if some students come to the class dreading what might lie ahead. Third, for some students this will provide an opportunity to ask questions if they foresee issues or challenges. Finally, they can develop empowerment of knowing that they can accomplish the work and tasks required by observing the requirements along with seeing an example of what was successful.

Hi LATONYA,
I concur! Visual examples add great clarity.

Hi Lynette,
You are very thorough as to what should be included in their research. You add great clarity to the expectations.
Patricia Scales
It is helpful, because they will get a chance to see what your expectations are. Sometimes you can describe things to student until you are blue in the face, and they are still not sure, but when you show them what you desire live and inc olor, the light bulb comes on.
It makes expectations clear and gives them ideas of how to get their projects started.
I teach anatomy & physiology and I have my students research different diseases to be covered that term and present the information with tons of pictures/photographs/diagrams to satisfy the visual aspect of their learning.
My criteria for putting together the power point is as follows: Name of disease, what body systems are involved, what does the body system do when there is no disease present, what went wrong, how do we diagnose the disease and how do we treat the disease.
The power point is usually no longer than 12 slides. I encourage students to add a Youtube video link. The video must be under 5 minutes.
The students are required to present their power point to the class and they are instructed ahead of time to not use words they cannot pronounce.
Showing examples of other student's work can help foster creativity. It can also help jumpstart a student who is "stuck" and seeking ideas to get started.
Hi Christine,
I concur! Great clarity is added when examples are shared.

Hi Clay,
Examples are great to share with students so that they know exactly what is expected of them.
Patricia Scales
i believe it is good so they can know what it expected of them
I always show previous student work. This informs current students what's required, what can be accomplished, and the type of work I find good and not so good.
By giving examples and performing demonstration this will giving a better overview of the complexities our student will come across in the work force. By doing this our student will be better informed and well prepared for the scenarios we provide in the classroom.
I 100 percent agree with Mohammed Quasem. By giving examples and performing demonstration this will giving a better overview of the complexities our student will come across in the work force. Hi Ali,
Once I give a pretest, I like to follow up with a post test to see how much they have grown.

Hi Daniel,
Most students are very nervous when they walk into a classroom on Day 1. Sharing examples of what is required really do ease a lot of tension and stress. Students have a better understanding of what is expected of them when they can see it.
Patricia Scales
Assessments or examples are effective way to evaluate students. For me giving a pretest (assessment) to see how much knowledge that has about the topic.
It may help to eliminate the initial fears students will have whenever they start a new course. It will make them more comfortable facing the coursework and will also give the opportunity to ask the instructor.
Hi Marie,
Students tend to ask less questions when examples are shown because they have a better understanding as to what is expected of them through visual aid.
Patricia Scales
Hi Steven,
I concur! Having an example eases a lot of fear and tension as well. Students are more motivated to get started and feel more at ease when they have an example to go by.
Patricia Scales
Hi Vicki,
I concur! An example always is helpful and can add great clarity as to what is expected of you.

I agree that when students move forward in their assignments before the rest of the class that makes it difficult for the other student because they then feel that they are not doing a good enough job. I explain to the students that are on track and following the syllabus that it is better that they focus and go at their own pace so that there will be less mistakes
