Hi Tammy,
It also provides great clarity.

Hi Patricia
I always get permission from my students to use their papers as an example. Many are proud that I use their assignment. I've had some students refuse to allow me to use their assignment. They stated that they felt embarrassed and didn't want any negative feedback from the students. I always honored their answer. Irma

It gives them examples of what is expected of them for the program.

Hi Camille,
I agree! Students have a better understanding when examples are shared with them.

Hi Irma,
Absolutely! Day 1 sets the tone for the remainder of the grading period.

Using an example will help them create quality of work. It will also help them better understand what is expected of them. It is like a design process start with a prototype and improve the design with examples, feedback, peer evaluations...

Examples of student work are used as an outline and basis for what is to be expected

Hi Patricia, it is impoerant to communicate all expectations on day one of the class. The students can email me any question for clarification during the course. Irma

For game courses, showing previous work has always been effective for me. It gives students a goal to meet or beat, and gets them interested in improving their own work.

Hi Katherine,
Students really feel more at ease when they have something to see to go by to complete an assignment.

examples of course requirements set clear expectations of what is expected from the student...it also helps clarify and mis understandings

I agree showing example of student work will let the student know what to expect with an upcomming class

I believe that it is imperative to show students examples of how what they are learning in the classroom relates to the "real world" because when I was in college there were some courses that I took that I truely didn't understand how it related until I was actually in my major. So I try to give my students the opportunity to learn in the classroom setting and they do it in the lab. By giving them a chance to apply what they learned in the lab, it usually makes the student understand what they learned a little better. Therefore, they can retain the information better for the next time we discuss it or they get quizzed on it.

By showing examples, I set the standard of work (quantity and quality) expected. The examples may also ease the students' fear (expecially freshmen) and allow them to get it!

Paul,
What a great idea! I agree that it shows the instructor's expectations. Having student's work displayed is like a reward. In other words, you are rewarding good behaviors and quality work. The idea is also building them up for career. If they do well, there is potential for financial and non financial reward.

Hi Jason,
It is always good to check with the student first to get permission to showcase their work. I have known instructors to not share the students name when showcasing a student's work.

Hi Erica,
Sahring an example serves as great protection because by showing an example you know you told them everything.

Well hello Lisa great to see you on here. I also agree that it allows the students the opportunity to know what is expected of them and prepare for those assignments, whether it be outside projects or research papers. I was also under the impression that with FERPA we were not allowed to show students work to the class without their permission as it violates their privacy. As such, I always ask before I make a point to showcase a students work, and as Lisa stated that it also gives them an opportunity to say no if they do not want to be put in that situation for feelings of embarrassment.

So they know what is expected of them and to protect the instructor so they are sure they have explained it to them, so there are no excuses from students that they were not aware. Also it motivates them to see what exciting things the instructor has planned for them.

Hi Orvileta,
I concur! Visual is a better way to show clarity.
