Hi Daniel,
I am sure your students appreciate the reminders. There are some instructors who do not believe in reminding students.

Students need to know that the Instructor is checking to make sure they are doing the assignments of the course. Our college gives 40 points per week to the students who have completed them as part of the student's grade. I check them day by day and most complete them and on time. This lets me know that they do read, complete the questions, and the worksheets that were assigned for the week. Quizzes and tests verify this as well.

I remind students on an almost daily basis of upcoming due dates, in addition to all due dates being listed on their calendars. Seems to work well, especially for the students that "forgot it was due".

Hi Jeanne,
That's right! We have to hold students accountable, otherwise most will not do any work.

Patricia Scales

If you don't follow up they won't think you are serious and will not bother to do the the assignment or the reading.

To keep them on track with understanding the extent of their progress. To show them that you are serious about the course requirements.

It is important to follow-up with assignments that are given to students because we live in a very high paced society. It is common to forget about things when the cares of life start compling on you. I do take the initiative to place reminders on the board as well as send updated messages through Engrade to my students. They are sent in a series of three, one 2 weeks prior, 1 week prior and 3 days prior. I also state the date before it is due with yet another reminder about the work. Because I do this, there is very little room for missed or late entries in my class.

Hi Sonya,
Students want their work to be counted due to the effort that has been given toward the assignment. You also made some great points.

Patricia Scales

There are a few reasons to follow up on assignments. It is very important to let student that have turned in assignments know what their grades are and they will be able to gauge where they stand with their grade. It also allows them to ask questions on information they missed so that they can try to get a better understanding of the material. Finally there is always a percentage of students that will not turn in assignment. Following up will let them know what their grade is and also let them know if they still have the opportunity to turn in the assignment late with a penalty attached.

Hi Ronald,
Ver fast paced! I am sure this being so fast paced helps with retention as well. You probably have good retention.

I am a massage instructor that has to teach at a rate that would baffle the average person...i have to teach 11 chapters of anatomy and physiology in 12 classes of 3 hours each. I have to give homework and if my students fall behind it is just about impossible to catch up so I must check that they are doing there homework. they also appreciate that i take the time to check it, for they know that it is so important to stay on track in such a busy schedule.

Hi Tabitha,
I agree! Following up with student assignments is a sure way to hold your students accountable. They should be reprimanded if they do not do the work.

Patricia Scales

Because it lets the students know that you follow up on every assignment, every test, and every aspect of your class. It lets them know that you are in control and you wont let them get away with missing or late homework all the time.

Hi Frantz,
That's right! We have to let our students know that we mean business, and we are preparing them for the real world.

Patricia Scales

The students have to be held accountable in class as in the real world. Not following up can lead to bad habits that will hinder them in the job market. They'll also take you and the class more seriously
too.

Hi Rachel,

If there is a passing score, this is a good idicator the student understands the information. We can only hope that they retain the information so that they can utilize what they have learned in the workplace.

Patricia Scales

Wow! That is an interesting approach. My question is how do you know that the students retained the knowledge tested on the quizzes in a comprehensive way?

Hi Daniel,
Students will take assignments for a joke if you do not follow up.

Patricia Scales

First, the student will feel more accountable if they know the instructor is serious about the assignment and will work harder to ensure that the assignment is completed on time. Second, and probably more importantly the student will see that the instructor holds them self accountable to the student in taking an interest in and following up with them.

Hi Jered,
Following up is key! As an instructor, you should want to know if your students are grasping the material or not.
