Hi Joseph,
I understand! Know what you are doing so that you will know what to look for. I like the reminder.
Patricia

A reminder for me is a sentence I learned early on in my employment... You must inspect what you expect. To reinforce the inportance of the assignments. They are an important learning tool.

To let them know that you want them to learn and are there to help them if they need it

Following up on assignments lets them know that you are serious about it and if you are responsible enough to follow up, they should be responsible enough to complete it.

Hi John,
Students need to know that we genuinely care about them. They also need to know that we want them to succeed.
Patricia

That's a good point Rhonda,

I believe that providing timely feedback does show the class that the facilitator cares about them...and their education.

John

It is very important to follow up with student assignments for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most important reason is to show them that you are serious about their education. Students are most appreciative of facilitators that provide them feedback on their class work, homework, and tests. Additionally, by giving them timely feedback, you are also showing them that you care. Lastly, it gives them the opportunity to know what they did right...and also what they need to work on!

Thanks!

John

Hi Karin,
As instructors, we should want to know if our students are grasping the materials. Homework acts as a reinforcement based on what was taught in class.
Patricia

Following up on a student's assignment gives the student feedback and awareness of their progress. When assigning readings, it is important to provide discussion and followup as review of the material and possible quizzed material to ensure comprehension of what was read.

I really feel this is an important concept for a student to learn well before they begin their careers. A student who neglects assignments and reading may also neglect work-related responsibilities that will have dire consequences in the working world. As an instructor, I feel teaching students these aspects of a career are of great importance as well as the class subject matter.

Hi Ronald,
Absolutely. We need to teach students exactly how it is in the workplace. Tardiness is not acceptable.

Instructors need to make time to do their job effectively.
Patricia

Hi Mark,
I understand your perspective, however I am a next-class-period instructor. I believe in immediate feedback.
Patricia

I beg to differ with "next class period".
I'm OK with "by 2 classes later."
Sometimes it's just physically impossible to return assignments "next class", if one is inundated
with tests, lab reports, homeworks, and class
projects from several classes.

Mark S

Follow up is crucial for effective teaching.
Carefulness of crafting tests to really
evaluate materials covered is anticipated
by students. If they know you will comprehensively test them
on what is covered, . . and if they know you will read and evaluate every word of their written assignments (not just glance at them)-most will step up, work harder, and be "most of what they could be".

I think it is very important to follow up on assignments. If not, what is the point of giving the student assignments? I have some instructors in my program who give the assignments but only place a check mark on them to document that they did recieve them. The assignment is returned ungraded The reply I get from instructors is, I don't have time to grade all of the assignments but it is a part of the college's grading rubric, so I must give assignments. So how does the student know if the assignment answers were correct. Again I totally agree if we allow lateness in turning in assignments this carries over to the work world. The student assumes that since it is OK with an instructor then it is OK with the employer. Wrong!

Following up strengthens your credibility.

Students will take you seriously if they know there is a consequence for not.

The key I have found to be successful is to remain as objective as possible & stick to school policy & the syllabus.

When you assess objectively, it's only a matter of checking the data rather than he said she said.

Following up on assignments and reading tells your students that you are serious about having this done.

it is important to keep you student on track with their learning process. If they manage to stay on top and in line with they syllabus, they will have the feeling to be at the same level as everyone else. Also as an instructor it is a way to show we care about them, we are here for them and we want to ensure they will succeed in this class. All these aspects should help in motivating the students to strive.

Hi Jennifer,
As an instructor you should want to know if your students are grasping the material or not. It is important to determine before test time if students are understanding in order to provide help so that the students can do well on the test.
Patricia

Beyond the obvious of grading purposes and ensuring that students have completed the work, it also allows you to check their comprehension of the material and whether or not they are meeting the expected/stated standards for the class.
