As we all know if a student is going to cheat he or she will do so if we give them the opportunity to do it,so I found that one of the best deterrents is just walk around the room and make your presence known .the minute you see or hear a student doing what could be misinterpret as cheating you let them know immediately.

Always good to include the cheating policy and consequences in the syllabus. This should create an understanding up front for all students.

Alot of times walking around and just quietly asking students hows it going gives you a chance to see whats going on

Hi William,
I let my students know up front why the separation is taking place. They no without the explanation. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.

Hi Shelia,
Why do you feel standing in the back of the room is most effective?
Patricia

I leave a seat between students whenever possible and move around the room. I have also found that standing in the back of the room is most effective.

I like to seperate the students to a point where they would have to get up and basicly make it a point to go out of there way to look at someones test. The students do not like it, but if you explain to them. We want to know what is in there mind ,not there partners.

Hi Patrice,
Change it up some. Sometimes tests seem to walk out of the room.
Patricia

Hi Timothy,
Cheating should not be tolerated; and it should be dealt with swiftly and quickly.
Patricia

Hi Vincent,
Absolutely, the instructor has to be on their feet. Grade tests after everyone is finished!

Firstly, it is important to review the information thouroghly. Also, it does help to have a new version of the test each time given.

to reduce cheating some of the things you can do is to be very visable to the students, don't sit behind a desk and do other work while the test is being taken. Move around the room, front to back. Start grading the test only after all the test are in.

Using more than one test version does work very well. I have had success with standing in the back of the room during testing and observing students where they can not see me. Students who constantly stretch or look around the room are looking for the instructor and are suspect. One of the most interesting situations I have encountered recently is students helping other students by providing answers during testing. They have developed some unique ways to communicate such as tapping the answers out on the table using a pencil. In cases like these, just good observation techniques and experience help.

I don't know about reducing the opportunity, but would you lot please learn that you aren't supposed to tolerate it? If students know they will be expelled, they won't cheat. And if they do? You're out nothing except a few non-students who were out to waste everyone's time anyway.

I do use two versions of every test or quiz so students are not able to copy off of their neighbor. When work is submitted online I will run it through TurnITIn when I suspect that plagiarism has occured. They do know that I use this program so I believe that it cuts down on that type of cheating from the start.

I have used this myself it works good.

Hello Michael,
Yes, students are clever. They will try to beat any system.
Patricia

I,have four forms an A B C D tests i may use an A and B on the fisrt component and C and D on the next test,I will also let them know that every component has four different test.

The different tests do work, watch out if you are using scantron forms, they will try to make a key for the different tests and pass it on to others.

You should review the (Test and /or Exam ) with and open participations of a small groups of students along with good notes taking to assure their succes and possible minimize to cero any kind of cheating.
