Hello Sabrina,
It seems like the student learned something from this situation.
Patricia

Hi Rick,
This students should thank you. You saved this "A" student. I can tell you did not want this student to get into any trouble.
Patricia

Hi Kim,
Yes, these are great ways to reduce cheating.
Patricia

Hello Elizabeth,
By sitting at different tables you are taking them out of their normal surroundings, which is smart, and of course be spread out always minimizes cheating.
Patricia

Hello Elizabeth,
Very good! Too much of anything is not good. Students talk.
Patricia

I change my final and quizzes on a regular basis.

I have my students sit at different tables and they are well spread a part.

I agree that spreading the students apart as well as more than one version of the test should reduce cheating.

Hi Lori,
You can never prevent cheating 100%. In an online environment it is a must to check students work against all sources.
Patricia

Hi Carolyn,
This is a great strategy that works just as well.
Patricia

Hi Ronald,
It is a shame, but at times we do have to treat adults like children. Some adults will take advantage of you just like children. Adults will try to get over as much as possible.
Patricia

Hi David,
Using mutilpe tests is a good strategy to minimize cheating.
Patricia

We have multiple tests also, I let the students know that its just chance which version they will get. This makes it difficult to know what questions will be on the test. The answers that might have been gotten from others who have taken the class before are likely inaccurate. If I do suspect a student is cheating. I position myself directly in front to collect exams as they are finished, being very visible. The cheater becomes fearful of being caught, but doesn't single them out in front of their peers like standing too close to them will. The non cheaters simply think your making yourself available. After all they don't have worries of being caught cheating, since they aren't!

When administering written tests, I try to have a very open view of the class. I walk through the class if possible but not so as to disturb the students. I make students turn off computer monitors, and cell phones. Clear off the desks of all extra materials. It is a shame we have to treat young adult students like children.

I try and use different versions of the test. If I don't have time to make a second or third version I will use the same test and mix up the order of the sheets. Some might be working on page one and others on page 3.

My teaching environment will be online, so one of the most important things we can do is to ensure that we submit each student's work to be checked against all sources. Having said that, there is still the obvious method of cheating which would simply be to have someone else do the work. We have two chat sessions each week. My thought would be to ask questions of each student to ensure that they have a good handle on the material, and if at all possible, direct questions to their papers and/or presentations submitted.

I had a situation once where one of my top A students was allowing a fellow student who had been struggling all term to copy from his exam. I saw them both plainly several times in the act. The student who copied failed the test anyway.(the cheating didn't help) eventually failed the class anyway. (poor attendance, etc.)
I e-mailed the A student stating that I had seen what was going on and that he subjected himself to severe penalties. I told him it was unwise to stoop to that level, he was better than that.....He responded back with apologies....The next class period he stayed after and we discussed the issue. The situation in a way resolved itself.....We still see each other on campus and he acknowledges my presence respectfully......

Hi William,
Good idea of going to the students while they are testing to answer their questions so that they do not have to get up, and perhaps look on someone's paper.
Patricia

like john we normally give out several versions of our test, this seems to discourage any thoughts of cheating. I also walk around the room during test which also works very well, it makes them aware of your presence at all times and also gives me the opportunity to answer any questions,I go to them so students do not leave their seat during test

Hi Jacqueline,
It is all in your presentation! I felt you just from reading your response--you're no joke! :-)
