yes, cheaters will cheat, the good thing about our program is that theres both a theory test and a practical 'hands on' for just about every subject. so if you cheat on the theory, when it gets to the practical, you will not succeed.

By reminding them how cheating is not going to benefit them in the future, and that they are paying for an education, not an opportunity to cheat the system.

Hi Allison,
Great idea! I especially like the idea of the makeup test being in essay format. I am sure most students try to take their test on time.
Patricia

I give two tests. They are the same, but the order of the questions are different and they are given out A test to every even student, B test to odd student seats. Then, make up tests are given in essay format - test C.

I split up my students so they are every other chair. i also walk around the room consistently when they are taking a test so they cannot cheat.

One good and funny way I have used before to prevent cheating. Is, I walk around the class with my terminator sunglasses on and when I stop at a certain place in class. I just stare at a general location, sort of what Secret Service agents do. It keep the students on task because they don't know where or whom I am looking at. Plus it also breaks the tension because it looks funny and this relaxes them a little.

Hi Keith,
I concur! Doing exam time is not the opportunity to catch up on grading; you are really producing the perfect opportunity for cheating to take place.

Get to know your students, build the trust factor.
Also understand why people cheat in the first place and then evaluate which, (if any) of your test takers are prone to cheating, this can be done throughout the term when giving small tests and pop quizes, also discuss the consequenses of cheating each time you give a test or exam.

Several strategies have traced the first attempt to give a good class and contribute their knowledge, however there is fraud during the examination I am always behind the classroom, and also use two or three tests in the same class

I have found that the best approach during an exam is a preventive one. Before an exam, I do a brief, non-threatening walkaround during which I glance quickly for desktop writing as I chat with the students (I also make it a point to smile often). Another point: An instructor who stays behind his or her desk while grading papers during an exam is asking for big trouble - this is the opportunity that cheaters look for. Remain standing, and walk around the class occasionally. Establish proximity with anyone who looks as if their eyes are starting to roam.

Hi Juan,
These are effective techniques! Utilize them so that cheating is reduced.

I have at least 3 versions of any test. If the class is too large to seat every other chair, then test A, B and C can be alternated among the seats. I practice the national standard format; all materials are to be placed at the front of the room, all electronics are to be turned off, if you must leave the room, bring your test to me, and I do not do anything else myself during their test time. This lets them see I am watching.

By setting rules at the begining of the course re: cheating and graded assignments.

The position at the rear of the classroom or
adjacent to side of the rows works for me.....
additionally I have made a point keep observing
any questionable situations, and make sure that
the student(s) involved see me. Keeping the
clutter on desk tops to a minimum helps, as well.

I have students sitting at tables next to each other in class, so I must use multiple forms of the test if it is a large group of students. I separate them at different tables when it is a smaller group. I also make my tests with essay, short answer, fill in the blank and diagrams. It is a lot harder and more time consuming to cheat on those types of tests.

I am still finding ways that the students cheat.

I let them know the school policy on cheating at the very begining of a new class. If there is room, I have the students sit in everyother seat. I also place myself where I can see all the students.

When using the standard exams from the book you have the option of more than one version of the
exam.Students setting next to each other have different exams

We use testing software to avoid the situation where students can cheat.

I have experienced that walking around the students' desks during and exams and also sitting behind them (when possible) has reduced cheating opportunities quite a bit. Not very innovative concepts, but they sure work.
