Hi Kevin,
Various versions of a test really work well. I simply let my students know that they are being watched; this helps deter cheating.
Patricia

We have 2 sometimes 3 different test that we give, everyone covers the same material only in a different order. The students never know which test they will recieve. This plus standing in front of the room and scaning the class during test has eliminated the cheaters.

Hi,
I don't really teach other classes at this time.
It is hard or impossible to catch cheaters in an online class. I have to convince the students that cheating will catch up to the in the advanced classes.

Hi Mark,
That is easy! One number changed will make the problem different. When you teach other classes what do you do to prevent cheating?
Patricia

It is easy to prevent cheating in math, I just change the numbers.

Hi Lisa,
I also let them know up front that they will be watched during test time, this makes them think twice about cheating as well.
Patricia

Hi Larry,
I've known instructors to deduct points from the students positive participation grade to curtail this type of behavior.
Patricia

I like the approach and use it with one exception. I do not provide the notice to the student that there exist different versions of the test or quiz. The collective realization that there exists cheaters is too clear to provide notice. Should the cheater not profit never knowing why is a better teacher than to perfect the art of cheating better.

I've encountered student's using text messaging to send and read messages during after. Their ability to conceal and multi-task is quite remarkable. Other than requiring the devices to be turned-off how have others dealt with this problem?

I believe a good way to reduce cheating in the classroom, let students know some of the methods used by others to cheat on exams or papers. Some time these methods will make students think twice about cheating. I don't think it will stop it but it will slow down the possibility of it happening.

Simply keeping students at least two seats apart essentially takes care of this problem.

I do the same Stanley. I then handout the exams so that each student receives a differnt version.
The only draw back is sometimes grading them can become time consuming.

I reduce student cheating by spreading the students out, (if possible), informing the students to place all books under the desk, I walk the room the entire testing period, and I recently started using answer keys. The student is not permitted to write on the exam, they are to record their answers on an answer sheet. i also use different variations of the exams.

I use alternative tests and stand at the back of the class to watch the students heads. A co instructor who teaches a different class also works with me and we split our classes in half and alternate students from each class to sit by each other. This strategy has worked beautifully.

Hi Theodore,
I definitely see your point! I make it obviously known that I am watching for cheaters to help reduce cheating.
Patricia

A student that cheats while taking your tests has shown you that they can’t be trusted. It is necessary that you bring it to the attention of the cheating student that you know that the student is cheating. If you don’t the student will continue to cheat during your tests and attempt to cheat in other courses.

Hi Janice,
I like how you make yourself unpredictable during test time. Students know at any given moment you can walk near them.
Patricia

Hi Khalia,
I require my students to save all of their files in their electronic folder on their computer. I watch the students fully to make sure the projects are not emailed to them.
Patricia

In my class, I always have my students put away all their books, bags, cellphones, etc., infront of the class. I provide scratch papers if needed, and only allow them to have pencils on their desks. I make sure to have multiple versions of the exam and hand it to the students in a sporadic manner. I never leave the class and make sure that I walk around ocassionally to make them aware of my presence.

Well during exams I usually stand at the back of the room, however my exams usually consist of objective questions usually True/False or multiple choice and a portion where the students actually have to produce a project using office applications. However , last quarter I had a student whom attempted to turn in someone else's project but I had no physical proof to take it to another level. So next quarter I am requiring on the syllabus that the students submit electronic and hardcopies of each project.
