Have the ssame test just have questions in different order.
Hi Winsome,
Same test, different arrangement, works really well. We must continue to do all we can to deter cheating.
Patricia
I usually do the standard; have students clear their desk and create extra space between anyone they are sitting with. I have had a teacher who created the same test, but arranged differently for students. One student was given one test, while another received the same test; however, arranged differently on their paper. I am considering this strategy for future tests.
I reduce cheating by paying attention to my students at all times. I have caught students trying to cheat twice this semester. It is amazing what some students will do when they think you are not paying attention. I am always paying attention, whether they realize it or not. I hope my students find it reassuring that I care enough to be observant.
Hi Paul,
I really like the different copy of test for absent students; this way they cannot find out what's on the test from those who have taken it.
Patricia
I have found that by praising the students for their honesty and explaining to them that they are hurting themselves and the ability for them to have a chance at long term employment, this helps them own up to being honest. I teach a technical school and have affluent as well as underprivilidged students I have found that by empowering them to be honest with themselves and each other this evens out the playing field when it comes to employment.
Since I teach English Composition, most of my tests are essays. However, when I do use an objective test, I make two different copies and alternate them throughout the room. I also make different copies for students who are absent on the day of the test.
One way is to make sure the students understand the lesson . Encourage the students to create study groups and participate in class discussions to help build their confidence and increase their knowledge. This helps them to feel good about themselves, and want to test their knowledge on what they have retained rather than to cheat. I am also up and walking around during every test and quiz.
I always tell the students the consequences of cheating if they are caught. This deters the majority of students from cheating.
Hi Dawn,
These do work well. I like giving essay tests as well to deter cheating, and I also let my students know that they are being watched.
Patricia
Multiple versions of the test, covering the answer sheet with the test as each question is answered, instructor circulating through the students watching every one for wandering eyes, clearing all materials from desks and tables, absolute silence until all testing is completed all help to prevent students from cheating.
I stand in the back of the room watching all students.
There are a number of strategies you can employ to reduce cheating, for example, standing in the back of the room and using different versions of the exam.
Hi Joel,
Yes it does. Students are not as tempting to cheat if they know they are being watched.
Patricia
I constantly canvass the classroom during testing. This discourages the students from cheating but also let's them know that someone is watching.
Hi Gail,
The different versions of tests have worked really well. It makes it extremely hard for students to cheat.
Patricia
Hi Silvana,
Some tests are simply harder to cheat on. I like how you take the time to rescrable/recreate the questions.
Patricia
Hi Melanie,
An instructor must be on their feet in order to effectively monitor a test. Poor monitoring of a test is being done whenver an instructor is sitting.
Patricia
Hi Jacqueline,
We must prepare our students as much as we can. Some students do need as much practice as possible.
Patricia
Hi John,
Grading in class during test time is a HUGE mistake. An instructor cannot effectively monitor tests and grade papers at the same time; something will go lacking and normally it is monitoring the tests that go lacking.
