Hi DaNae,
It is important for students to know that we care about them. I firmly believe that a student does not care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Patricia
Hi Mark,
It is certainly a win-win situation whenever an instructor builds a professional relationship with a student. The student will try in every way to please the instructor, thus causing the student to develop into a successful individual.
Patricia
I agree with this- each student needs to see that you interact with them and that they matter. At the beginning of each course, I try to do a few "games" to help students get to know each other as well as me. This helps to show the students that each one of them matters and that the are needed on the team and in the class.
Hi DJ,
Student involvement is a must. An instructor should make it a point to interact with all students on a daily basis. Students need to feel a sense of importance, afterall they are important.
Patricia
By providing an interation with all of your students, you involve all of your students. Everyone wants to be involved in some manner no matter how small the role may be to you, it might be the grand ole opry for others.
Interacting with students goes a long way toward developing mutual respect and trust between the instructor and each student.
Because of this relationship, the instructor may more effectively implement an optimal learning environment in which everyone wins.
Every student has something to share that is valuable to the class learning environment. It's important that we give them the opportunity to participate and feel involved in the class.
Hi Nan,
Interacting with students is vital. Rapport building with your students can make life easier for everyone. The communication process is a lot smoother whenever you have established a relationship with the student.
Patricia
So that you can a good rapport with each. When a student has a connection with the instructor, he/she is more willing to learn, participate, willing to do his/her part. Also, it's a quickest way to stay in tune with your student progress. If there is a problem, you can talk with them or they can talk with you. It's always good to have interaction with every student.
Hello Julie,
Yes, I greet each student daily, and I tell each student good by at the end of the period. I also will find things to complement my students on, such as beautiful dress, I like your shoes, nice haircut, etc. Students need to know that we care about them, and we pay attention to them.
Patricia
Hi Patricia and all,
Every student is important - just as important as any other and they realize this when the instrurcotr relates to the student through feed forward/back -- Online learning allows the instructor to open a posting and respond -- perhaps ask additonal questions to help the student use her/his critical thinking skills. In a traditional classroom, the instructor can recognize a student for contributing to the team or mentioning a key aspect of the studen't assingment or perahps share a web site or link tha the student provided in the assignment that will help others....there are many ways to communicate/interact with your student....an effective isntructgor will ensure that s/he interacts with all of the students. The first few days in the class room is the ice breaker..perahps requiree students to post their bio…from the bio, the instrutoctor can comment on several different aspects to the student. All students should feel important – and that the instructor cares about their leanring too…..to do so, the isntructor must interact/communicate with all her/his students.
Have you found a special way of interacting with your students?
Hi Van,
Absolutely, if there is a relationship, the student is very comfortable around the instructor. The student does not mind approaching the instructor. Rapport is everything when it comes to a student/teacher relationship. Instructors should make it a point to make every student feel comfortable.
Patricia
I think every student needs to feel a connection to the instructor. I think sometimes students feel intimidated in a college level class, especially if it is a subject with which they are less familiar. If the instructor makes an effort to interact with the students they will be more comfortable asking questions or making comments.
Hi Michelle,
Great response! I make it a point to interact with every student daily. I teach computer classes and during lab time, I make sure to visit every student at their workstation, and we have small talk. Students appreciate the interaction.
Patricia
Interacting with all students is very important and a crucial part of an everyday instructor. If you do not interact with students they will feel left out and will not learn as much from the instructor. All students need to be interacted with equally so they feel equally treated fairly. Some students go out of their way to communicate with the instructor. I really enjoyed the tip at writing the students names on a list and checking them off everyday. One way I make sure I say hello to each student everyday at the begining of class, by doing a lineup and saying hello and having them fix any uniform infractions as well as asking them how they are that day. Once production begins in my class I roll thru the class table by table and student by student. Works nicely
Interacting with each and every student is important, that we treat each student equally. They will each feel they are part of the class. Making eye contact and listening to what they say helps me to determine whom may need extra attention or guidance. Also, I may edit the daily plan.
Hi Kiarra,
I call on everyone as well. Every student should feel that they matter. A student should never feel slighted in comaparison to another student.
Patricia
Hi Maggie,
Absolutely! It is very important to get to know your students. You should make it a personal goal to get to know each student. You can better assist, if you know the student.
Patricia
It is only through interaction that an instructor can know a student. The more you know about a student, the better chance you have at making learning meaningful, engaging them, monitoring them.
