Hi Scott,
Rapport building with students is very important, but you must keep it professional. The student must understand you are the instructor and not their friend.
Patricia
I think interaction with the students is one of the most important parts of teaching as long as it doesn’t get too personal. I like to sit with the individual study groups, find the quiet ones and find out how their doing, sit with the loud ones and give them things to do. A little personal attention seems to make the students trust you. If they have an issue with anything they tend to want to talk to you about it instead of just holding back and becoming frustrated.
Hi Patricia,
Students should always feel important. Students want to know that they matter.
Patricia
Everyone has a need to feel as if they belong. It is important to make all students feel as though they are a crucial part of the learning experience. The right type of atmosphere can create greater opportunities for gaining and retaining knowledge.
Hi James,
What a great way to get all students involved. Very interesting!
Patricia
Hello Amy,
Establishing rapport is a sure way to gain respect.
Patricia
It is important to gain rapport and to assimilate with the students in order to gain their respect, trust and comfort-level with both you, other students and class content.
During the lecture portion of the subject, I will ask a question that may have more than one answer to it, to try and start some kind of discussion about the subject, this will help to get students more interactive among each other. The lab portion of the class,( and I have a lot of lab time set up for my class ). During lab projects, I will have to explain or demo different steps that we are doing, I will do this at different lab group tables and have one person from each lab group there to see what is to be done and how to do it, then I have them go back to their lab group and explain the procedure to their lab group. This way there is a different person each time from the groups, every one gets involved.
Hi Eli,
Students really want to know that you care about them.
Patricia
Hi Eli,
Each student is to be handled differently based on the personality, therefore it is important to get to know your students.
Patricia
Hello Quesstonnal,
Each student should matter to the instructor, and each student should be made to feel very important in the classroom.
Patricia
To engage each student is to get a better understanding of how they add to the learning environment. I like for each student to understand their value as a class member.
I think that instructors, too, feel at ease after interacting with each student. At least with me, it's the idea of "no surprises" and the fact that personalities tend to be consistent (i.e. if I have a loud or disruptive student, I know what to expect and how to handle it).
Yes it does. I think that caring shows respect for the student - that you are willing to take time because they're important. THAT is what it's all about!
Hi Dawn,
Students really do feel at ease whenever you have interacted with them. Students will come out of their shell because they are now more comfortable with you.
Patricia
Hi Eli,
Students want to know and need to know that you care about them. Caring goes a long way in education
Patricia
Yes - interacting with each student shows that you care about them which will hopefully give them more confidence to speak out in class and participate in group interactions.
This builds a relationship with each student and puts them at ease and allows them the comfort of interacting with the class. If students feel they know you a little better then they feel they are on a common ground and this may actually help them perform better in class.
Hi Eli,
I try to make it a point to interact with each student daily. Students appreciate the interaction.
Patricia
It is important to interact with each student to show acceptance of them among their peers and to indicate to them that you value their opinion. This "sign of respect" is a very simple way to show a student that you care - about them as not only a student but as an individual. In this way, you earn their trust and, hopefully, their motivation to excel.
