Hi Angela,
I concur! We must be professionals at all times. We are constantly being watched, and you never know where you will come in contact with your students. Your outtings need to be chosen very carefully.
Patricia
It is very important to maintain a professional image because students will not respect you if you display image that is not appropriate for your career. Therefore, we have to remember that we are professionals on and off the time clock.
Hi Mary Anne,
Image says a lot about us, either good or bad. We must project a good image so that our students look at us in a positive light.
Patricia
Hi Stephanie,
That's right! We must be the professional that we want our students to become.
Patricia
Hi John,
Boundaries must be established. The relationship between the student and instructor should be strictly professional in nature.
Patricia
Hi Jordan,
The students should fully understand the authoritarian role of the instructor through demonstration by the instructor. The instructor should be the professional that he or she wants their students to become.
Patricia
Hi William,
Absolutely, we must lead by example!
Patricia
Hi Paul,
I concur! I never make it a goal to befriend my students. The goal is to produce a quality student so that he or she can graduate and be successful in the workplace.
Patricia
My goal is to give students the knowledge skills and tools to succeed. Friendships take time and are a separate goal.
To expect respect, instructors must model the highest level of professional deportment. Students will learn from our example.
Patricia, the most effective way to maintain the students respect is to be professional. To distance oneself from the students yet display sincere concern about their success compliments a boss to subordinate relationship. Class lessons are smoother and more learning is accomplished when the only true leader in the classroom is the teacher.
If you get to close they make think the rules no longer apply to them.
You need to maintain a professional distance from your students so that you don't get trapped into seeing them as friends instead of students. If you see them as friends, you might tend to treat them as favourites, and not be able to discipline them when it becomes necessary.
They need to understand that this isn't a friend relationship.
You are not there to be their friend you're their instructor. You do not wanted to be viewed as playing favorites. And you are being an example of the professionalism.
Maintaining professionalism at all times is a MUST because this will show the students how to maintain a professional image when they get in the work place.
Maintaining a professional image is important in order to gain all the students respect.
I always tell my students to practice CPR which stands for Courtesy ,Professionalism and Respect. Yes, I want them to be courteous and respectful at all times. But , if you want to get a job and keep it , you must be an absolute professional at all times , I tell them. The instructor can effectively teach the virtue of professionalism by being an example. The instructor must dress and speak like a professional at all times. The students must be reminded that the instuctor is their supervisor, manager, their boss in class , so when they get a job and go to work , they can apply all the things that they learned in school including utmost professionalism.
Hi Ralph,
A parent/child to instructor/student is a great analogy in every aspect. We must guide, nuture, care, and lead by example as a parent as well as an instructor. Boundaries must be established.
Patricia
There has to be a line drawn between instructor and friend. at some point and time. usually in the begining class sessions this point can be made by expalining your time in the field of your expertise, and then letting the students knowthat you are trying to get them to a point of being where you are. An almost parent child mentality should can be used to help you get to this frame of thinking.
