William,
This is a must....this also helps with networking as well. You never know when a job may appear!

Cathy,
I like this idea!! Magazines and journals will keep the students up to date and it gives them more ideas on what to expect in the workforce.
Shelly Crider
Become a member of your professional organization and read magazines, e-mails and journals regularly.
I have them sign up for magazines and catalogs relevant to our industry. I have them research continuing education and trade shows in the industry (cosmetology and esthetics). I take them on field trips to different businesses so they can learning about the simularities and differences of how each business is ran. In our business things change daily and to be successful in business they have to be current in what they offer.
Carmina,
Networking is everything in our society!
Shelly Crider
I agree, being a member of your professional organization can help you stay up-to-date in your chosen field. I also advise my students to read medical journals, attend conventions, and network with other profession in their field.
David,
This is a post that takes me back to when I was teaching kindergarten! You do, indeed, see when a student actually "gets it"!!!!
Shelly Crider
Gregory,
Thank you!!! It is so important to share real world experiences as opposed to textbook perfect experiences!

True Phillip, I have also worked in the automotive field for many years. It is changing in many aspects: technology, operations (structure), design (changing consumer tastes), government regulations, competition, etc. Since we are a global economy, the business field is very dynamic when it comes to change and students need to be made aware of this.
Hi Shelly, I relate real world expereince to the concept of life long learning. For example, as a former automotive engineer, I would relate the need to update skills as technology changes. The same can be said of a doctor were new procedures are replacing old procedures to treat individuals. Then I will relate examples to thier specific fields. I also encourage them to join a professional organization in thier field. This will allow them to stay current with trends.
In the automotive field also explain to the students that the years of learning start after you get out of school. even more so now in todays market. as they enter the market or dealerships they can't show boat to the older techs. But in fact they can help them understand the newer technology that they were themselfs taught.. in so becomeing an instructor them selfs it funny to see there faces when they get it
NEAL,
The year can change so much!!
Shelly Crider
I explain to my students even if they are at the top of their game when they leave school you must keep up with the year to year changes or within a few years you start to loose touch. also many job codes have a set of courses that must be compleated each year in order to keep your rating. the problem comes when they start to get settled in and too comfortable with their day to day lives, then taking the time to learn new information takes a back seat. I hope by giving them a peak into the future they will understand and avoid these pitfalls.
Robert,
One such instance would be technology. We need to keep up to date with technology no matter what field we are in.

Laurel,
It is good to keep up with medical. We expect our doctors to continue their medical knowledge, nurses and mas as well!
Shelly Crider
Being a lifelong learner is an essential part of someone's profession. The environment in which we work and live, changes and evolves. Technology, for example, is a component that has completely changed the way we live, communicate and even manage our life and our businesses. To be a lifelong learner helps maintaing someone's skills in line with the changes and requirements of a chosen profession or working environment. I personally believe that the emphasis should not only be in bringing someone's skills to match the requirements but potentially anticipate the changes that will require a new set of skills.
Becoming a lifelong learner is not only important for student but it is also important for us as nursing instructors. Every single day there are new information in nursing. We are constantly reminded to attend in-services,seminars, and subscribe to nursing magazine in order to keep up with what's new in nursing. One has to be self-motivated, in our pursuit of knowledge in order to teach our student new and updated information, and also to set good example to our students.
Sandra,
Role model is an excellent source of teaching!! Be sure to be involved in your class and your students will be involved as well.
Shelly Crider
I strongly believe that students learn by role modeling. I provide examples of how I am constantly reading, researching, and studying to keep abreast in my field of study.
Christine,
Thank you for the extra resources. I believe that we all love resources, so.....everyone.....feel free to share yours!
