Christine,
I like this idea. LinkedIn is a nice social website that offers professional growth. What others do you offer?

Phillip,
I do the same with my students. I constantly bring up the fact that learning is something that is goign to continue to stay with them throughout their careers if they want to stay on top of the new technologies and be considered top technicians.
One strategy I use to help my students see how they can become lifelong learners is to introduce them to the professional organizations associated with their fields of study. Most professional organizations offer continuing education courses and the opportunity for certification in specific areas. Even subscription to the online newsletters offered by the professional organizations offer up-to-date information to be used on the job.
Evangeline,
That is such a good example. There are at least 100 codes that change every year....let alone what ICD10 will bring in changes!!!

Phyllis,
Good point on forgetting what is etched in our minds. To "relearn" new ways can be a challenge to people.

I am a medical billing and coding instructor and I tell the students that in medical billing and coding things are always changing. In order to be proficient in their field they must keep learning and applying what they learn from different medias to enhance their skill sets.
Yes, information does become obsolete and replacing old info with new is important. That's why we keep learning. Forgetting the old stuff isn't always easy
so I often tell my students about the evolution of what I am teaching which will incorporate the old with the new so they can see how much easier things are now as opposed to how they were done in the past. I gives perspective.
Phyllis,
That is a good point. There are times when what we have learned becomes obsolete, so we need to rely on the new information and forget the old.

Brenda,
As a patient, we like the idea that nurses and doctors keep up on the new and improved techniques!
Shelly Crider
Amanda,
that is an excellent discussion topic as well....who knows where we will be in 10 years!!!
Shelly Crider
Randall,
With some topics always changing....insurance, and technology being a few....it almost makes us have to be lifelong learners!

Everyone must always be learning, for sure, but remembering is where the learning pays off. It's sometimes easier to learn something new than to remember what was learned.
I happen to have an exceptional memory so people think I am smarter than I really am, it's kind of fun bringing up all kinds of trivia.
Back to the students, I always encourage them to look things up and to think about what information they find, and to remember it.
In nursing, students learn that every 2 years with license renewal, students must have completed 24 hours of continuing education to renew their license.
Also, in nursing, medicine/technology is constantly changing with new drugs, new procedures, etc.
If 1 of the principles of adult leaning means that students must see the applicability & usefullness of their learning, the above paragraph helps students see that learning occurs for the rest of their lives......
I teach in the medical field so I always begin a new program with the history of the student's chosen field and a comparison to where the technology is today. It leads to a discussion about being a lifelong learner and how 10 years from now the technology will be different yet again and there will be new things to learn.
I think this is true of most vocational type of positions. Especially true if you are in a supervisory or leadership type of position. Directives, budgets, and other financial expectations will be delivered and assessed using technology.
Mark,
It is amazing what we do learn from students on a day to day basis!

After teaching for 2 1/2 years now. I stress to the students to always continue learning . I even admit to them I have learned from students about specific make and models of automobiles that I did not have field experience with.
Elizabeth ,
Great example! Sharing what you are currently doing is a great idea!!

I love to express to my students how it is essential to become a life-long learner in the Culinary Arts Field. The field is VAST! There are always new trends, as well as a whole world with different culinary traditions. I show my students that I am a life-long learner, by sharing with them the books I currently read, articles, and share with them my experiences from my travels.
