they do get engaged in the class and they tend to get competitive especially when i say there's a prize at the end of the game.
Sarah , it is possible to see positive results from these methods as you have described.

The response of students is great when using activities during class. The students are very attentive and focused. It helps the students learn and it shows when they take their quizzes and tests.
You definitely have to keep the students active and alert; they love it! I like the ball toss activity; I will have to try it with my students. It's a great learning tool that I wish I would have used in the past.
azra, it is best to check in with students as you have described here.

I have had great results with activities. One activity I do is have the students do five individual drawings. I divide the class into groups of no more that four students. I provide colored pencils, crayons and table paper. They use their book as a guide; drawing body regions, quadrant, cavities, and directional terms. Along with this they must label each with the appropriate organs, such as, "right hypogastric region", or LUQ, and other terms like inferior and superior. This project lasts the whole five week term. I also play Jeopardy as a review.
Arlinda, positive reinforcement is a useful tool.

When activities have been used, students responses are that they enjoyed & learned the content in a better way
hands on activties increases the chances of students retaing the pesented information, by positive reinforcement.
The element of surprise has been very effective. My students keep telling me they do not know what to expect from me. They say I keep them on their toes reading my course all the time...lol. It works. I am always impressed with my student's performance.
By using these different games the knowledge is keep.
Lisa, thank you for sharing a simple but very successful teaching method.

I have used the Round Robin technique, I give them all a different # (1-5), then break them into numbered groups (sit with different ppl) and make them use flash cards and go around the circle.. if someone messes up, that person has to start from the beginning and then they continue.. the students love and and they learn all the Med term words
I love getting my students actively involved, even if it is a 1 minute exercise. I have used the ball toss before with great success, as well as hands on demonstrations of tough concepts like the Prisoner's Dilemma (candy is a great motivator)!
When I use varieties activities I noticed the response has been varied. When the activity is more accedemic inclined and challenging, the more matured and brilliant students tend to enjoy it. When it entails fun and excitment, the more socially oriented student in class tend to enjoy it. I generally like to mix different activities and sometimes I add an element of surprise
Ghazanfar, this is a wonderful teaching idea. Thank you for sharing it.

Koosh balls rock! they tend to incite giggles and revitalize students! I have used 20 questions for the ID game.. having one student stand in the middle of a circle with the med term on their forehead visable to the other students.
