It a benefit if you can escape and regather your thoughts.

Dr. Gary Carlson

Sometimes if I am experiencing workplace stress, I take some time away from the area that is causing the stress by going to my car to listen to music.

Sometimes I may take a little longer at lunch to decompress and enjoy the outside by taking a walk.

Sometimes, you just need to talk to someone to relieve yourself of the built up stress you are holding within.

I have learned to take a short break and walk around the outside area and clam down to make a better choice.

Juan ,

I relaxed just reading your response. The secret is not to forget what works and practice it always.

Dr. Gary Carlson

I agree. Doing some form of physical activity can definitely help with stress relief. I also enjoy mental relaxation such as nature sounds, laying in a park while enjoying a soothing breeze or hearing birds chirp, etc. If the weather does not cooperate, a nice quiet room with nature sounds playing on a disc or ipod can help, or even just hearing rain hit the windows. When you close your eyes and focus on the beautiful sounds, work-stress becomes secondary

Ankur,

Value and purpose is something we need to place in front of our people. Our soldiers and service men and women face the unknown on a regular basis. There values and purpose carries them through.

Dr. Gary Carlson

Fear of the unknown is an overbearing weight for individuals. The unknown can go so many different ways. Therefore, I'd suggest trying to figure what can be "known" or figured out, and if it can't be wary of fearing it. Planning ahead and focusing on the knowns help to alleviate some of that stress.

Tim,

You are right the key is to find what is right for you.

I am a big fan of the deep breathing at stressful times. I also am convinced that regular exersize is huge for not only staying fit but reducing stress.

Keeping your employees interest at heart keeps the human relationship at a positive level. It is always good to maintain a good sense of humor with having understand their expectations on the job.

Dr. Gary Carlson

I always think Humor is a great way to releive stress. Making a joke out of something silly that happened quickly easy tension. Also as a manager i try to relieve stress in my staff by simply patting them on the back and asking them "how's it going?" "hows the wife" or Kids.. "How was your weekend..." Empoyees always seem to relax a little when they feel thier manager is approachable and no different to them. Just simply taking a couple minutes out of a busy day to talk about ...well anything not work related..

Todd,
You seem to have the right attitude and practices to contend with the stress issues. The first in maintaining your sanity is the point you have made about your job. When you love your job it is easier to deal with the motivating stress.

Dr. Gary Carlson

I have a tendency to buckle down and perform at a higher level. Stress is a motivator for me at my current position. I am comfortable with my Job and I understand my position and how to effectively do the job. My last position was not as care free. I was overworked. My fun level was at an all time low. No effort was good enough. So the stress of performing at a high level was overwhelming. I failed to employ correct stress techniques.
Today I practice stress release by exhaling deeply, I mentally relax by letting my mind think of peaceful thoughts. 1 I stop the negative thought2. I breath and relax I allow the stress to exit I self calm. 3. Reflect on what is happening and 4 come up with an easy solution...

Jeannine ,

Talking to trusted friends and family is always a stress release. Rethinking issues makes for better decisions.

Dr. Gary Carlson

Stress is a factor in everyone's life. I try to put my personal life into perspective when I get too stressed out and ask myself "how important is this in my life?" If it's not that important in the grand scheme of things, I seem to bring myself back to reality. If it's a major problem, then I seek the advice of family members and close friends and keep to my support system. As for co-workers, I've helped many people. Sometimes helping someone is as easy as just being a good listener.

Tiffany,
There many ways to comfort your stress. You have found one that works for you. The key is to keep a balance in your life. Good health practices, exercise, mental relaxation and spiritual rejuvenation.

Dr. Gary Carlson

Music has always been a personal stress reliever. Sometimes, when I am extremely stressed, I will sit in my car and turn up whatever song is playing and I will sing at the top of my lungs. I am sure it sounds terrible, but it makes me feel better. I have also done this in my office!

Linda,
