To tell them about some interesting news we have for them but not actually telling the news on the voice mail. We create curiosity and urgency for them to return the call.

Henry, That does create urgency. Do you always have important information to give the student?
Dr. Jean Norris

You can tell them that you have some important information to share with them and they need to call you ASAP....

We could say spaces are first come first serve and if you do not apply today, you would need to wait till the next intake. We are creating URGENCY here.

Julie,
Hmmmm....I like it. How might you arouse curiosity?

Dr. Jean Norris

Diana,
Good idea! Can you give us an example of how you might use humor specifically?

Dr. Jean Norris

I do this too. I will always end with "again, my name and number is ____. I look forward to speaking with you!"

Arouse curiosity-to get the person thinking, to stop and listen

I think humor is a creative way to get people to want to call us back and I like it because it isn't usually a typical way of approaching the situation. I haven't been really using humor in my voicemails yet but now I want to start. I use humor a lot when talking to them over the phone or in person because I think it makes the person feel at ease, more comfortable, and find you more likable. It is a good way to empathize with people(I feel).

That is a great practice, Patricia. Do your customers find that beneficial?
Dr. Jean Norris

On my case, I call to ask how is their furry friend is doing.

Leon,
It can be helpful to remember the prospective students motivation or desire for sure. What do you do when you don't know what this is though?

Dr. Jean Norris

When calling in leaving a message remember the WIFM. What is in it for me the prospect.

Leon, Interesting tactic. It's my belief that you are being honest, but what impression does it give the student when they find out the difference between application acceptance and acceptance to the school/college/program they applied for?
Dr. Jean Norris

After I identify who I am and the company I represent I let the student know that their online application has been accepted and that I have great news just for them give me a call today! Most call back just to inquire about the acceptance of the application. This is when I provide them with all the great news regarding coming to see me.

Michael, Interesting! Can you give an example of the humor you used?
Dr. Jean Norris

Patricia, These are all great tactics. Thank you for sharing!
Dr. Jean Norris

Humor and confidence is a must. Know what you are going to say before your call.

I let the prospective student know that I am excited for them as they venture into this career. I try to sound genuinely excited and "available" for them to talk to. I make it personal and I use their names.

Evan, That is a great tactic. Can you give me an example of what you say to get them hooked? I'm curious!
