As a Director of Education and Campus Manager, I go into each classroom at least twice a week and check in with the students to see how they are doing. I have an open door policy with all students and I ensure that they know they can come to me at any time. We also use student surveys after each course. We review these surveys on a regular basis. I also track attendance and when I see a student missing classes, I speak tot hat student directly to try to resolve whatever issue they are facing which is causing them to be absent.
At which time you lose your student and anyone else who is a "follower" of the student. I have usually tried at that point to sit with the student and talk however times needed to "bolster" him or her. Sometimes the fear is also from their ouw lack of self-confidence because they ahve been out of the academic world for a long period of time. Other times it is truley due to an instructors method of teaching. In which case that instructor needs to be counceled in their method of delivery.
That is an awesome tool! Combine that with empathy and understanding from staff and faculty.. the possibilites could be almost endless
unfortunately, no. And that is one of my concerns. It is more word of mouth. I am trying to come up with a foundationaly more sound way. Student surveys are good..however not always occuring at a time when needed the most.
First verbally, then by way of handouts. Verbal communication allows me to get really animated!!! Students seem to follow what's going on that way. Then the handouts re-iterate what they are now visualizing in thier minds.
Astute observation, Dianne. The connection to Admissions is often overlooked and underutilized. Do you have a formalized procedure to connect new students back to their reps and then on to support service personnel?
How do you communicate the day one course expectations to assure that students get the message?
What's the procedure to review books ad materials? What's involved in making a change in resources?
our institution use a survey and critique system to allow students to voice their feelings. I also believe its up to the instructor to make the course expectations clear on day one so the students can develop their own expectations accordingly
I would like more information on the Noel-Levitz survey.
I make sure I go into the classes on a monthly basis to reiterate our expectations for them as students. I also have suggestion boxes placed on campus for student concerns. We also conduct surveys on a monthly basis.
Is the Noel-Levitz Survey useful? I would like to know more about it.
Dianne
I happen to feel that the DOE and the Program Advisors need to step up and meet with students..be more visible..put the Empathy radar out there, as it were. Depend on Admissions to alert Admin. if one of their placements is not happy. Typically students will go to their Admissions rep. if they are not happy.
Dianne
I also make myself visible to the students, making my rounds frequently, so to speak . If they see me, it helps them to feel more comfortable to approach me to talk.
constantly making sure books, materials are available,up to date. Conducting student surveys.
It seems like I better find out...Our school's effort to train everyone in retention techniques is apparent by the ammount of names I recognize on this forum. We all should be held responsible when a student has dropped, but I feel the burden the most, thinking "what could I have done differently".
We are being trained on capps on line. also. we keep a close eye on their attendance.
Do your instructors actually write the daily objectives on the board? Has it been a useful tool? What happens if they don't comply?
We have a director of education, program director, and a campus director in addition to the instructor that have made themselves easily and readily available to students.
