Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

First Class

Showing expectations and goals are critical for demonstrating to students what their expectations are for the course. I've always felt it was important to show a bit about myself to help create a more comfortable learning atmosphere. I also look to have students interact with each other on the first night of class. It helps to build familiarity and teamwork for future projects in class.

Planning

I have found planning to be the lynchpin to any successful class. It's essential to have your entire course planned out to maximize student learning. Of course, some flexibility is warranted. If a topic comes up that requires further discussion, teachers should be flexible enough to spend additional time if needed.

delivering the material

During my lectures I encourage story telling regarding the content that we are covering and adding in truth if someone is misleading the medical facts. I also play games with the students and show relavant videos and pictures.

In class

I do let the class know my expectations the first day, and I also ask for their expectations on this course. I introduce myself and my credentials and I give them an overview of the class ahead.

planning

A wise instructor told me once, "you never really feel prepared for a class until you have taught it at least four times." I do feel that it is a true statement. I also tell the students that the syllabus for the class is an outline and we will get from point "A" to point "B" during this course.

my style

my medical students say I am "crazy" in a classroom lecture but I like to think I am "unique". If I have to jump around the room, sing songs to get them to understand the material......then I do it.

Knowledge improvments

Good materials to help me improve as an instructor

Lab exercise results???

What are you looking for from the results of the students performing lab exercises? Which is more important? Results or the proper knowledge of the correct path to follow to get the desired results! As a Factory automotive instructor we want our students to become entry level tech when they complete the necessary training to become certified. Here we are trying to show that the path is just as important as guessing the final results based on previous labs. Entry level techs need to understand a path to find the results and with knowledge and experienchey will then be able to get the proper results no matter what.

Instructor Evolution

A great way to evolve as an instructor is to review how you teach the class on a daily basis along with a thorough review of the course and the students at the end of the term.

Plan your lecture

When planning a lecture for the day it is imperative to read through the slides and either add or remove information. The most important factor of planning is to be prepared to deliver and engage with your class.

Hello and Welcome to Nutrition

This will be a most exciting class and one that I hope provides you with a wealth of information in regards to health and nutrition. It is very important to express to the students the class and what topics will be covered.

Engage in Science

Teaching science courses to students who do not have a science background can be challenging. One of the best ways to engage a non-traditional student in a science course is to begin a class/lecture with a current topic that specifically relates to the content. If one is able to excite the student about a topic - they will more likely succeed in completing their course assignments.

Staying organized

My biggest difficulty is remembering to bring everything I need to each class. With only a few minutes between classes, everything comes with me all day, which means I am preparing the night before or on the weekends. As a single mom, this continues to be my biggest challenge.

what type of test/assessment do you prefer?

i prefer making multiple choice tests because they are easy to grade and it covers a vast amount of material.

test making

does anyone else find it difficult to make assessments for your classes? i find that i dont make enought assessments for certain courses. i beleive theyre inportant becuase not only does it show the progress of learning in your students but it helps them retain information.

questions in which you do not know the answer

anyone else get discouraged when a student asks a question that you do not know the answer? i sometimes find myself questioning myself and my knowledge and then again, i end up learning something in the process

hands on, tactile

I teach massage so almost all of my students learn better hands on. Some of them learn through note-taking and writing things down.

having students look at materials while lecturing

i often have students have their bpook open to the material im covering...figures and tables put a visual to what im lecturing, i feel students soak in information better that way.

making class interesting

i made up an enitire game like jeopardy to get my students involved and they learned a ton from it and got to know each other..also it helped eliminate classroom anxiety

planning

i find that the more i teach a particular class, the less time i spend on lesson plans
