The Experienced Student

There is always, especially in technical institutes, the student who literally knows the information covered in the class or for the entire term/semester because they already have professional experience with the material. When it is impossible to move them into another class, what are suggestions to help keep their attention and enthusiasm during the term/semester?

Teaching and Acting

Sometimes I think teaching is like being an actor or actress. You need to know what role you need to play and sometimes you have to get into character. Does anyone else feel this way? By doing this, we grab students attention. I have also found keeping students on their toes so they don't know what to expect helps as well.

First Day

I have found playing a quick game on the first day of class, helps students feel more comfortable. I have also learned while it is important to lay the foundation for the course the first day, we should try not to overwhelm them because they may get discoruaged.

Planning

Sometimes when I am doing my lesson plans, I get overwhelmed with the amount of information and how to pick out what is the most important information students need to know. Recently I try to ask myself, could the student use this information in their person and/or personal life. If so, I include it. I have found this helps some. Any other ideas?

The 5 C's

I found the five C's of an effective instructor to be interesting they were: Credible Candid Compassionate Committed Clear Has anyone ever felt like felt like they were not as comitted to teaching as they once were due to burn out? If so, how did you overcome it?

Totally confused

It's not often I find a class or course difficult but with 107 I have met my match. I have studied the material but get little from it. I'm going to take the test shortly and I will be shocked if I get a passing grade.

Delivering the course content

This lesson was good way to pass on the information to each student in various ways

Meeting the class for the first time

this lesson was interesting to view the students perspective of the first day of a course.

Planning and preparation

Now I understand threason behind lesson plans and preparing a syllabus for students

Developing as an instructor

I really did not know that model, manager, and motivator were so important in teaching since it is my first time as an instructor

Memory

I will use the clues to memeory location in the classroom when I am stressing important points to comprehend.

Printed Learner Material

I found it simplified when all 3 types were described - easy to understand.

Games

I have always been a firm believe that learning should be fun! Games work best in my classroom.

Simulation

I did not know that simulation was the better way to learn even though I have employed it in facilitating the learning process in my classroom. Positive reinforcement that such a practice works best!

Reduction of trepidation

You, as the instructor/professor must establish your goals on the first day. Stating unequivocally your expectations of the students will establish a basis for class control. Goals and grades cannot be achieved if the instructor/professor has no leadership abilities, and is most assuredly not conducive to a learning experience or environment. By being fair, but firm induces an allegiance and less learning time will be wasted trying to regain control of the class.

learning style

one of the most inportant things is the style the the instructor use so that way can get good attention of the students

Music

I did not realize the power of music in the classroom nor how the differfent BPM could make a difference in comprehension. I plan to utilize the effectiveness of music in my classroom.

color

I was amazed to discover how valuable a tool color can be in the classroom. Now that I am aware of it, I will use the appropriate color to liven the learning environment.

Arriving early to class

Goal orientation has to be an objective of all instructors/professors if they want to succeed. Arriving early for proper preparation is absolutely essential for topic delivery of the day. Review, define objectives, and delivery of said objectives is imperitive. A student may be tested periodically, the instructor/professor is tested EVERY DAY. Utilization of extra time before class can also be used to tutor a student who may be struggling with a certain precept. I, as an instructor have not failed if I have extended every learning tool that I may have to the students.

SAT

I will employ this technique: Suggest, Ask and Tell when I feel the class has deviated from the learning objectives of the day. I will also be more aware to do so in a positive vs. negative way.
