Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

How do CATs improve attendance?

If students know that they count on these little aids would they be more inclined to show up knowing that there are aids to keep them on track.

Rephrasing your questions

If my questions aren't getting answered because of being too complex or too far ahead, what's a good rule of thumb for how far to backtrack while rephrasing my questions to get the class back up to speed?

Learning Styles vs. Teaching Styles

I have found that just as the students find it easier to learn in certain ways, it is easier for me to teach to certain styles of learning. It is a constant effort to make sure that I consider the students' needs before mine.

First Impressions

You have only one opportunity to make a great first impression. Make sure its the right one.

learning styles

i feel it is very important to be able to select proper material and tests in order to properly assess the the knowledge of the students in order to prepare them in there growing experence

Motivation

It's important to encourage, support, share knoledge and experiences to the students through their training for them to keep on going until they complete their couse, even with all problems of personal issues they have to deal .

Professionalism

Professionalism should be a key concern of all instructors. As teachers we must display professionaliam at all times and model the desired behavior. I have always run my classes with the thought that "If it would be unacceptable in the workforce then it is also unacceptable in class." Many of our younger learners have never been exposed to these professionalism concepts. If we do not model and enforce these concepts then we are doing our learners a diservice. It all boils down to "anybody can get the job, but will you still be around for your reveiw" or has the fact that the graduates behavior has caused him to be termnated before his career even really gets started. Technical skills are important, but the professionalism skills are just as important. The employer must feel secure about the gratuate representing the business in front of the customers. I've hired and fired many people. One of my biggest concerns when hiring was would this potential employee embarrass the business. If the person has some basic skills and background along with good professional skills I will teach them what they need to know.

learning disabilities

"Research has shown that students with learning disabilities are of average or above intelligence. They are challenged in their learning as a result of their disability causing them problems with decoding and recoding learning materials."

Matching Content to Employers' Need for Students' benefit

In the Advisory Board meetings, employers talk more about the problems with employee attendance, following directions, accountability, goal setting, end-result thinking, and critical thinking more then computer skills or other skills we in the teaching business generally cover. Our textbooks in computer training don't even cover the employers needs above. So I try to stress the importance of following verbal or written directions, proofreading or editing, meeting deadlines, getting the job done, and figuring a problem out.

Classroom Setup

I go over the following with my students on the first and/or second day. It is one of the pages on the class website and the last page on the syllabus. Classroom Worksite The classroom is setup as a simulated professional worksite. It will help you to acquire the discipline needed for positive career growth. In addition, it provides the technical skill sets and the social or “soft” skills needed in order to be successful in professional occupations. The classroom has been developed from the feedback of International Business College’s Advisory Board Committees and studies conducted by the Pacific Institute, a business research firm that assists Career Schools and Colleges like our school. Workstations All students are assigned workstations just like you would be assigned a workstation or office in the professional world. You are responsible for keeping your area in good condition and shutting down your workstation if you are in the last class of the day. Attendance This is one of the major concerns of employers. Your class attendance affects your grade in two ways. First, six or more absences will reduce your overall average grade by a minus 10 points. Second, you will receive a deduction on your individual project grades based on how late your projects are submitted. Attendance is based on you signing into class everyday, which is in effect punching a time card. Teaching style You are expected to read each assigned Project. Lectures will be short, to the point, and will discuss the highlights of the current Project. Most of the class time will be spent working on your Laboratory assignments. Guided lectures are used to help individual students or the entire class to enhance your job skills. Just like a professional employee you are responsible for your work. Just like any supervisory, I am here to help you and answer your questions. Make sure you have the proper folders & files needed for the course. If you are unsure, ask your instructor if you have the correct folders and files. Projects If you come to class and work everyday, you will have more than enough time to complete your projects. If you don’t attend class or waste time on the internet, you will have a completion problem. Questions I would rather answer your questions on what you want to know, than lecture on what I think you want to know. I encourage you to ask at least 2,000 questions a day. Questions are the best way to learn what others already know. Project Evaluation The Evaluation System helps to assess the quality of your work product and proofreading skills necessary in a professional occupation. It illustrates the requirement for quality work on the job applying both hard and soft skills. Remember, quality work means more $ in your pocket. The syllabus covers the evaluation process in more detail.

Vocabulary?

By introducing a smaller number of new words each time the students become familiar with and understand the words easier.

hesitate to speak up

Students that hesitate to speak up in large class settings are more comfortable speaking up and participating in small group discussion.

Eye contact

"Eye contact is looking at each student long enough to make a connection, but not so long that they start to feel uncomfortable. The best time frame for this is 2-3 seconds."

Teaching styles vary

Ihave found that there several different ways to teach the same topic. Depending on the students backgrounds i will use different teaching styles to best suit the students learning style.

Multiplke Choice Questions

These type of tests are usefull to see if your students are retaining the knowledge you are teaching them....

skill testing

In the skill application tests the students basic skills can be assessed but sometimes their ability to apply those same basic skills to diagnose more complex problems also need to be assessed.

Formalative Evaluations

These are very useful in gauging what your students are understanding, and retaining...

Go On-line

This term I set up on Google...a free website for all my classes. It has everything each syllabi has on it that is required by my school with more in-depth explanations. It includes deadlines for assignments, my evaluation methods, attendance rules, and links to the current term's syllabi. An Announcement page, contains new evaluation instructions and pass due notices. It has help set up a more professional environment. Going on-line has been a big boost to the students learning the value of the internet. It has helped me in reducing handouts etc.

Delivering methods of analysis

Be sure to completely make clear to the errors and omissions that can interfear with presenting the proper answere to the test procedures.

meeting your class for the first time

do not only report or tell your history, report what you feel is going to be part of the possible future of the field. e.g. genetic history or whats going on in research
