Bloom’s Taxonomy

How does the flipped classroom help the students reach higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy?

Difference Between Traditional Pedagogy and Flipped Classroom

What do you believe are the main differences between traditional pedagogy and the flipped classroom?

Implementing a Flipped Classroom

Considering the core elements and driving factors, how would you implement an effective flipped classroom?

Stakeholders in the Flipped Classroom

How would you effectively communicate with all stakeholders included in a flipped classroom?

Communication

I belive that this lesson was excellent in explaining not only how to perform in a classroom setting but, communication in general. This lesson breaks down different techniques to assist us in creating a more productive learning environment for our student and it also allows us to then be accountable for our responses towards our students during class.

Mix it up.

Having different types of testing in one test keeps it interesting for the students. It's good to have a couple completion tests, multiple choice and a few T/F. This requires different types of thinking processes from the students. Essay questions are still the best test of a student's progress.

Students as "patients"

A good way to check the "real world" skills students is to pair them up with another student for role playing. One student plays the role of patient while the other is the hygienist. The "patient" can ask a question and the hygiene student can demonstrate their knowledge (and communicative skills) by answering the patient's question(s). This gives the students a feel of what they'll do once they're working in a practice.

Positive reinforcement

If a weaker student doesn't get any positive feedback on an answer they've given, they're far less likely to speak up in the future. Sometimes, if a student has given an incorrect answer to a question, you can get others in the class involved by asking another student to help the first one. This keeps the students involved and gives positive reinforcement to both students. Confidence is key for effective teaching and learning. Peer involvement can, at times, be more effective than just the teacher asking a question. Students can ask each other questions; this boosts confidence for both and helps their social skills too.

Student groups / Tactile

In my experience, study groups are very effective because they allow students to mingle and discuss the work they've been given with their peers. This allows all of the students to round out their learning styles as they work together. Tactile exercises are important because they allow the students to be both comfortable and proficient at using the instruments they'll use daily as a hygienist. After gaining all of knowledge they'll need, correct and effective usage of the instruments is the second most aspect of the job.

Professionalism

I agree that establishing a professional image in the classroom environment is a key success factor. Many students show respect to the instructor when this image is displayed.

A response that is totally off base... what to do?

I encounter some situations where a student answers a question and it has no connection to the topic or the response is totally wrong. There are times in my Myology class that is tough to help them recover from that as the rest of the class knows its incorrect. So is probing question the best..such as mike I like you review page 34 in text and see if that review provides the information to support that answer. or Mike I think you are confusing that with..... check on page 34 before i ask you to revisit this question? Or Redirect by Mike has given us the answer for _________ but I am still looking for _______________

Content Delivery

I always aim to deliver the course content in a plethora of ways. I try to appeal to as many learning styles as possible.

First meeting

The first meeting sets the tone for the rest of the course. I always try to include a little bit of humor to get the students to relax and see that I am human too.

Effective learning environment

I always strive to create an air of comfort and relaxed discussion about course content in my classroom. I find that presenting the material in a more relaxed, discussionary manner yields greater student results.

Developing as an instructor

I believe in continually developing as an instructor, because our fields are constantly changing. We must stay current with the times.

Different Learning Styles

I try to teach in a variation of learning styles. I know that not every student learns in the same way. I learn best in a couple of different styles, auditory, and kinetic. I think that by listening to lecture and participating in class discussion can allow for greater memory retention. I also think that hands on learning allows the students to become excited about what they will be doing in their chosen field, and thus makes them want to learn.

The First Day

I always enjoyed the first day of classes. It lets the students know who you are, and also give you an insight on who they are, what concerns they have and it also allows them to make new friends of their classmates. I also like that when going over the course requirements it allows the students to ask any questions that concern them about the course.

Managing students

I have seen in the classroom what I have seen in the workplace. The person or persons trying to focus on one thing and not willing to move on to the next thing before the other is completed. How do I handle this situation. I need to move on but do not want to come across as not understanding there frustrations.

New Instructor

I am a new instructor but have worked for the company for 3.5 years as an assistant. It is very different to be in charge of the class and know all of the material. I am still getting my footing on becoming a well versed instructor. I have assisted other instructors and have seen many different teaching styles. I try to incorporate what I have seen from them and also the best way that I learn new material so that I can provide the best atmosphere for my students. I am finding this material very helpful. Thank you!
