Retention

It is hard sometimes to motivate your students depending on your subject area. For instance, I teach a document processing class and it's hard to keep my students motivated because it's basically a typing class with little instruction. These types of classes are hard to motivate. Any ideas would be appreciated!!!

Understanding the Learner

I have a wide variety of students ranging from 18 to 65 as I'm sure many instructors do too. My goal is to make all of my students feel comfortable in my class and make sure they know they can ask questions and participate without worrying about other students and what they are going to say. I do this by getting to know my students and letting them getting to know me. I try to be empathetic and understanding about their situations and help them in any way I can.

Motivating Students

I have found that if I change my class up a bit, the students find it more exciting. I also try to include them in all of the time instead of them just listening to me.

Refocus

I thought this part was very interesting. Sometimes it can get discouraging when you think that the students are getting disinterested. You need to step back and put yourself in their shoes. Imagine listening to someone lecturing everyday. That would get boring. You have to be creative and innovative in order to have your students interested in what they are learning.

Acceptance in the classroom

What I have learend in this unit has solidified what I have witnessed in the classroom. I have seen the apprehension adult learners have especially with courses that involve the use of a computer. Conversely, the younger student population tends to be overly confident with courses that involve the use of computers and then they tend to make too many mistakes.

New discussion topic

I think how t vary your lessons for the type of student you have in the class would be a good topic.

Motivation

How can you tell when a student is self motivated? Some students do well, but I doubt their level of motivation.

Frequent Quizzes

Very valuable lesson learned on giving quizzes frequently and at the beginning of class.

motivating students

Students are motivasted by our excitement about the learning process.

empowerment

It is important to empower students to take an active role in their learning experiences.

I need some help with motivators!!

I have a problem, since our students are adults, I have encounter that certain motivators that might be intresting and fun to some students to others they feel like a waste of their money or time! how can I fix this?

Do we have to?

I hear this a lot from my students. I find it very important to know the answer beyond yes. What I mean is an instructor who can say, "Yes you do have to BECAUSE...you will get _____ out of it and that will be helpful in the future when you ____." Make sure students know the value of the lesson and how it relates to their goals.

Vetran to the ME Generation

It is interesting to think about what events and inventions have influenced how different generations learn. Vetrans had World War II and had to get by with less. Their work ethic is very dedicated. Baby boomers went through a time of protest and in the classroom they also seem to question everything as a result. Gen X spent much more time figuring out things indepently and they are less likely to ask for help. Just knowing these traits is useful as an instructor. You can tailor your approach by just noticing the differences between the generations.

Motivating

I like to use examples when I lecture. When discussing a topic I always bring up my past work. I like to give examples for the students to understand what it is in the work place. I feel it motivates the student and also give them an understanding on what they get to learn out in the field.

Ice Breakers

What is a good Ice Breaker for novice learners in the healthcare industry?

Students that don't call in when missing a day

We make our students call in if they will not be coming in that day. Reason is that we want them to be in employment setting. Like if you miss work!

Never Wrong Answers

I particular love this topic because my mother alwaays told me that there was never a dumb question except for the one that is never asked at all and with being a good instructor i always left room for my student to give a answer and make sure that they dont feel like they were totally wrong in their belief. It is our job to direct them in another way that they could learn or see another way of how that answer can be best defined rather than them telling them "your wrong". The group thinking activity is a fun way that i will utilize in my classroom on tomorrow.

Different Age Groups

When I went to school back in 1997 there was a varitey of ages in my class. I remember the class was seperated. The 20 year olds all were together and the 30 to 40 year old were together. My instructor at that time didn't have us all work together. Being an instructor now I make sure there are no clicks. I don't have the same two people buddy up all the time.

Customer Service in Education

For-profit education is the "product" that the student (customer) is purchasing. Because they are purchasing it, they are intitled to get what they pay for... The biggiest difference that I see is that they must participate in the service to obtain benefit. From a business stand-point, the for-profit instituition should build "merger" operations between other independent institutions so that when student drop-out, or can not be successful in one discipline, they can be referred to another isnstitution, with a share of the financial revenue between businesses. It like an "up-sell" without holding all of the liability.

late students

I have numerous students that are alway late. My lectures start promptly at 8:00. Waht can I do to get them to arrive on time.
