source of student motivation

I started a new term today and as we did the ice breaker, I wrote down something each student said that was a motivation for them to start this course of study. This couse has reminded me how important the students original motivation for starting the program is in keeping the motivation alive. I always keep working with motivational toools from what i hear them say currently, but remembering their hot button in the begining and support it as need is very important.

pair-think-share

I try to utilize this technique with my students to help encourage them. I find it best to pair students who are not understanding with students who have comprehension of the subject matter. It gives the students a different viewpoint and maybe helps clarify their understanding.

Use of the term "career college student" in these CEUs

I don't like the use of the term "career college student" in these CEUs. To me and everyone I know it means someone who attends college for as long as they can because they want to put off getting a job or someone whose college performance is so poor that it takes them an inordinate amount of time to graduate. I'm reminded of the John Belushi line in "Animal House" where in front of Dean Wormer he expresses his frustration of expulsion with, "six years of college down the drain." I'd like to see the term be modified to more accurately reflect the intended meaning - "career-oriented college student."

Motivating a student

An instructor should frequently praise his or her students. When an instructor praises a student,it can only motivate the student to do better in his or her course work. For example, if a student does not understand the reading material completly, praise the student for his or her efforts and help the student understand the reading material. This motivation strategy will lead to improving the student's learning process.

Organized adult learners

Most of my adult learners have a lot on their plate. They are single-parents,have school full-time, have a full-time job, plus some are taking care of their parents and some have major health problems. With all this, most students are organized--meaning that they have their homework completed before class, come to class on time with a good attitude, and are extremely motivitated to learn.I love teaching adult learners.

Motiviating Students

Assisting students on staying focused of their objectives for returning to school will keep them motivated to succeed. Reinforcing that they made the correct career choice encourages them to continue with their education.

Engaging Student

Keeping students active in class will assist in keeping them allert and receptive to the information. Relating the material to any past experience will show a form of relevance to the material being covered. It will make the material more relatable.

Class Participation

During the Lecture Instructor should create questions regarding the course topics of the day that will allow all students the opportunity to participate. In addition, setting up group activities surrounding the material is very good for class interaction. With doing so they instructor can evaluate how well the student retained the information.

student retention

I really liked how the Professor from Harvard used the Horse and holding the reigns to tight as an example of what not to do in class. I can see where a class could feel smothered and less than respected. By lettting the horse have some reign it could experience and grow. Thank you Darlene Stalter

Motivation

I think it is important to get to know your studetns so that you know how each of them can be motivated. This will make it easier to help them achieve success.

Assessment

I always try to get feedback to students on tests grades that very same day or the next day at the latest. It keeps them excited or helps them realize where they need to focus their attention.

Student Retention

As a full time faculty member, I try to make myself available to students as much as possible to help them with issues that may effect their retention both inside and outside the classroom. This, to me, is very important in learning issues before they become too big to fix.

Understanding the adult learner

As a teacher that started teaching middle school students, it was quite a transition to the adult learner classroom. I have learned to embrace their previous experiences and work them into discussions as much as possible.

Understanding Student Characteristics

Now that I have a clear understanding of the concerns that adult learners may have as they enter into college, I can server as a better facilitator and help them meet their needs.

keeping focus

even when the hiway seem like it will never end, it does... just stay focus. the pot of gold is at the end.

Motivate all Learners

If we stay focus long enough, the learning will come.

Intrinsic vs extrinsic- good job

I don't understand how wanting to get a good job is listed just as extrinsic, yes there is a paycheck involved, however, most people work for reasons other than just receiving a paycheck e.g. helping others, feeling productive, keeping busy etc.

Motivating students using motivational interviewing

I teach psychology and implement motivational interviewing which is a counseling technique with my students. I have them set a goal for themselves at the beginning of class as to the grade they want to receive and have them brainstorm ideas on how they can receive that grade. They also rate their level of motivation and come up with a plan on how to increase that motivation. Mid-term grade time is a good time for them to re-access their motivation as well as whether they are on target to achieve that goal. They also do a change plan around mid-semester which can be a personal goai, but will often have to do with their study strategies in either my class or another. Here is a website on MI if anyone want to check it out http://www.motivationalinterview.org/

How to create a non threatening environment in the classroom?

I completely agree to this idea that i just learned that giving overview about the class that we are teaching, providing a good and brief outline and a good summary of the lesson, choosing "pair think share" giving more secure sensation to the students

Motivational Interests of Adult learners in the classroom

Adult learners will work well independently with minimal instruction, often are seen as class leaders, they responsibly attend class on a regular and consitant basis, and their security in the classroom is evident.
