Keeping students informed of their status is important as it lets them know how well they are doing in mastering the course material (and therefore passing). It allows the students to plan their time and study needs. It also alleviates stress for the student to have this information in a timely manner.

Hi Cindy:
Good points all. And you've identified an important dynamic that in certain professions, the necessity for prompt, accurate, and thorough feedback is integral to the students ongoing success.

Regards, Barry

It is important to let students know where they stand in a course as they will then know if they need to study harder, look at different ways in which to achieve their goals, such as changing their study habits or getting tutoring if need be, and so forth. It is also important to collect and get assignments back to students ASAP so that they can change the way they do their assignments. For example, in nursing, we have careplans. IF they do not receive them back weekly, they will not know how to improve and may fail this component if they are given all of them back on the last day.

Hi Mardi:
Yes, I agree. I think when the teacher takes the time to speak to students regarding their performance, it shows them the teacher cares about thier learning and success in the class. I think it can also reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the teacher and the student.

This will allow the students to know of their performance during the class and they can make adjustments to their study habits based on thier performance results.

Hi Todd:
When we give students frequent updates, it provides an opportunity to also reinforce our relationship by expressing care, suggestions, or advice about the course, or even back-side parts of a students life. Some are shy but some are willing to open up. When that happens, this sharing status is usually appreciated by the students.

Hi Gerald:
Connecting with your students to keep them posted of their status is a valuable activity that also allows you the opportunity to reinfornce and strengthen your relationship while you are sharing the academic information. Students appreciate the time and effort a teacher takes, especially if they sense that you care about their success.

it is essential that students have a goal or focus to center on - giving them their grades on an ongoing basis allows them to correlate where they are and where they need to be

To illustrate to them how they are doing in the course to date. It reinforces their desire to learn if they are doing well; and shows them the areas in which they may be weak.

Hi Carolyn:
I agree that behavior or the students approach to the course work is good information to be shared with by their instructor. Most students have existing learning styles that are somewhat innate and would seem difficult to change. But, as you point out, correcting poor study habits, working on missed assignments, or improving their skill level early on is definetly advantageous for students.

Regards, Barry

Students need to know how they are progressing. They may need to change their learning style, or habits before its to late.

Hi Barb:
I agree letting students know where they're weak in class is a good idea. I also think this gives the teacher an opportunity to connect with the student, to relate in a couteous, caring, and helpful manner. Sometimes students will share other information that indirectly reflects on their class performance. I think that's a great time to offer suggestions or advice and students usually appreciate teachers who demonstrate their helpfulness in contributing to the students success.

it is important to keep students aware of their performance in the class because they know where they stand, and where their weak points are so that intervention can be started early. Many times students are in competition with themselves, and they have to understand that the grade is not the important thing as much as understanding what they are there to learn. barb barritt-jarosch

Hi William:
Yes. I think you've stated the core reasons for keeping students informed!

Regards, Barry

Keeping students informed on their status helps prevent them from falling too far behind. If they are having problems with the early material it isn't like to get better as the course progresses. Identifying early shortcomings allows for the student and instructor to develop a plan to improve student performance and the likelihood of a successful outcome

Hi Isaac:
I'm sure many programs, such as yours, require more than running some scan-tron's through to derive a final grade. Email works good if everyone has access to retriving messages. Surprisingly, some students don't have internet access (but at my school, they all have it through thier student accounts as enrollees).

I would add that if a teacher is going to send an email, that's a great opportunity to add a bit of commentary, encouragement, praise, or suggestions for the student as they move forward in their career.

in the culinary world, the students always want to know what their score is after they have made a dish. Even though I know this is important to them, it takes so much time to let them know so I tell them they cal email me and I will email them their grades. This works great.

Hi Gloria:
I think students are always appreciative when their instructors take time and effort to inform their students of their staus. Better teachers will also take time to offer suggestions for improvement, advice, counseling, and advice to assist them in improving their grades.

Hi Pamela:
Yes, just as teachers we measure a students performance against established guidelines, informing the student of that status is very important in order to formulate an effective study plan and/or remediation.

Regrads, Barry

Students are interested in their standing in the class andtheir grade average. Not knowing course grade on an ongoing basis causes unnecessary stress and may cause the student to fail their potential.
