Hi Bridgie:

By consistently allowing students to have an idea of how they are doing in class, they have the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible. By doing this, they promote a more successful outcome for themselves by the end of the course.

If we keep our students informed at all times it gives them a sense of where they need to be improving. I teach an 11-week course and in week 5 and week 9 I give them progress reports with all attendance missing and work that was due but not turned in yet. If their grade is low I assure them that with work turned in it will raise their grade. In most cases by the next class meeting I have all work due. However, sometimes I feel if they are informed week by week it tends to discourage them if their grades are low and puts alot of stress on them.

It is very important because the students will know that you care a lot about their learning.

There are many reasons, it can light a fire under a complacent student, allow for interaction with a more reserved student, give advice to achievers.

A lot of students don't keep track of their own records; I keep them informed weekly (during a three week course) and upon request. They might not know their true status and not be aware that they are doing poorly. These updates help a lot of them "pick up the pace" if they have been lagging.

It is important because a student might not be aware of falling behind. Some students that didn't make the grade they wanted use this information as motivation to do better.
