Hi Veronica:
And, ideally, we would offer this information to the student on a weekly basis so they can change study habits as needed.

It is important to keep students informed of their status in the course at all times because they need to know if they are learning the material. By knowing what their current grades are, they can also know what assignments need to be completed and where they need to improve or areas of strengths.

So that if there is a problem with a student and their grades, they are aware of the problem and know what they need to do to bring their grades up.

I have found that students need to know where they stand at all times. It helps keep them focused and on track.using an electronic grade book allows them to check thier progress anytime.I also use written assessment forms that are returned to the students after grading.this shows them where they make mistakes, what needs improvement, and where thier strengths are.

Coming back to school, especially for adult learners, causes anxiety and challenges self confidence. Not knowing where a student stands in a course is just another source of stress.

New research has shown that when students know his/her actual grade, they tend do score higher in a course. Students need to know where they have to go and how they are going to get there. By providing student status/data, this will drive student learning to reach his/her potential.

I feel regular and personal status updates are important for several reasons. They provide opportunities to give help if needed while there is still time for your advice or suggestions to help them learn what is expected and improve thier grade. It shows that you are interested in giving them feedback on how they are doing. It also helps the student gauge thier own progress in concrete terms.

Hi Jodi:
The more we can inform our students of where they stand, the better chance they have of making improvements during the course, and as soon as possible.

I was a student once; in fact I just achieved my MBA and I know what it's like when grades are not returned in a timely fashion. Also, if I see a student struggling, it lets them know that you as instructor care because you notice and want to help them succeed. Keeping students informed is a great motivator, especially if they are doing well. I find some of these students choose to raise the bar even higher.

It is a guidepost for them to understand where they are and where they need to go next. If a student isnt aware that they are failing the class they have no way of correcting their path.

It is important to keep students informed of their status at all times so they can understand where they are strong and weak in the areas of comprehension, retention, recollection and able to apply what they have learned.I think this makes for a positive learning experience.

You want your students to know where they stand at all times, so they can have plenty of warning as to the need for more effort to put forth.

Students need to know that you are concerned when they are not doing their best.

Ask students that anytime they receive any grade lower than a C, to get with you on what this did to their average.

So that the students know at all times what their status is and what their grade is. This helps also when they disagree with some aspect, but they cannot say that they were not informed.

Well, in all honesty it is real life! We all want to know our status in work, play, marriage, all facets of life. It is only fair.

We're all not superior at everything, and some things do take real work on everyone's part.

It is the fair thing to do to keep students informed.

It gives both the student, and the instructor, information on progress within the course.

This lets students know where they stand at all times. Keeping students informed also reduces anxiety. I think a relaxed environment as opposed to an anxiety provoking one is the best way to learn. I also believe that immediate feedback (0n grades/performance) promotes the best learning environment. With this in mind, I attempt to get grades back to students as soon as possible.

My students take weekly quizzes. This allows everyone involved (the students and ME) to know how they are progressing or what they might be struggling with.

Students appreciate the course even better if they know exactly where they stand. It becomes a gauge of their learning ability. Strong points are being commended and weaknesses are being identified so as to provide assistance towards improvement.
