Paula,
Frequent and early on discussion works best for me. There needs to be time for correction to have an impact. Stheudents will appreciate the attention as well.

Paula,
Rubrics are good because they are objective. Of course, it's still important to discuss the recommendations, suggestions, and advice with encouagement, enthusiam, and interest in the student understanding where they stand in a class.

Paula,
Sure, when we can be open and honest about how a student can be successful the student will recognize their cares about them and assist them in their learning.

This is a great habit - also allows the instructor to focus on all behavior, not just the negative that is witnessed.
I also agree, and it makes them aware of the need to concentrate on the material on hand in addition to review of previous material should a re-take be desired at the end of the course.
I also review the grading rubrics day one. Following each opportunity I calculate their value on that item as well as their course to date, excluding the attendance component.
To allow for awareness of academic standing within the course and minimum requirements for additional testing.

Great! I think frequent and early on status updates are key to maintaining a concurrent dialog with students and their progress in class. It puts the teacher and student on the "same side" as to progressing towards the successful completion of the course. I think it also conveys the teacher cares and is willing to understand barriers the student may be experiencing. Also, it identifies weaker areas that need improvement and a plan to work on building the knowledge and confidence the student has in understanding the material.
Barry Westling
Allen,
Great. This should allow weaker student performance to be identified early on so we can intervene, offer whatever help we can, and have time to see student improvement while there's still enough time to make a difference.
Barry Westling
Shining,
When we share status, we are indirectly conveying we care about the students success. That's why I think frequent, regular, and personal communication is needed. It also gives us a chance to offer our encouragement and support. Sometimes a student may have something goint on that's interfering with their successfulness, and these performance updates give us a chance to listen and offer advice (if requested).

It is important to give students a weekly update on the grades and the missed assignments in the class so they know where they stand in the class. I have the students also keep a 9 weeks grade sheet with all the assignments that are planned through the 9 weeks and everytime papers are given back have them fill in their sheets and calculate their grades. This gives them standing of their current sitaution in the class. Then we check it with my grades and usually 95% of the time the grades are the same, usually pending some daily points missign when they are absent from the class.
The students need regular feedback concerning their class and lab grades.
If they do not get this, it can cause a lot of stress for some of the students that are a little slow on understanding course material.
Fact is, some students are better at understanding than others.
So as a result we give all of the students Progress Reports every week and of course we take time to answer any questions concerning their grades.
Students will know how well they are doing in a course and decide how much effort should be made or give up this course. So it is important to keep them informed of their status in the course at all times.
Informing students of their status in the course can give them a sense of accomplishment. It help those who may be struggling know where they "stand" in the course. It will show the student their weakness and strength in the course.
QUINTIN,
Keeping students informed will assist them working on areas needing improvement (and it doen't hurt to try and offer encouragement and support while were at it).

To keep them interested and focused at the same time. It also lets the student know how well they are learning the subject and if they need to study more.
Kelli,
I think taking responibility for doing their best is prime. That said, I can be the conduit to facilitate the realization of their goals and achievement as a successful student.
Barry Westling
Phuong,
If we discuss status regularly and early on, we can impact and maybe prevent disastrous results. It also allows us to offer encouragement and demonstrate that we care about the students successfulness.
Barry Westling
Proactive is always better than reactive. Students need to take control of their grades. They can not do so if they are unsure where they stand. Our institution has an electronic gradebook, so grades are always available to the students. We also complete a midterm grade form in all of our courses. This provides the student with all the necesaary information they need to receive their expected grade. No surprises !
keep them posted will help them know were they are at in their learning skills and grades
