Paul,
Great. This appears sound and logical. Current status helps keep students striving to maintain and perhaps exceed where they currently perform.

Diane,
If we can keep students involved by keeping them informed, then we need to do that. There is a kind of motivation that can result when a students knows they are making progress.

Barry Westling

important to keep students informed at all times

I do a thorough outline of the grading policy on day one. After each quiz I review this so students can calculate grades based on attendance and quizzes.

Students need to know how they are doing for several reasons. One, to keep them motivated and invovled, also, to make sure if they are NOT doing well that they figure out why quickly.

Kenny,
Electronic gradebooks are great for recording and access by students. Yet, I believe 1-on-1 discussion can contribute to better outcomes. We can encourage, give advice, and convey we care at the same time.

Barry Westling

J,
Sure, and to the degree the teacher is involved in keeping them informed, the better and more accurate will the completion target be met.

Barry Westling

John,
You mention security - I like that. Students should be open to hearing from their instructor as a trusted friend who is giving accurate, realistic information about performance, and a plan for correction if applicable.

Barry Westling

Russell,
An old saying I learned (in the 70's) was "90% of my students should be performing at 90% or above". While that may be a bit altruistic, it does point out that, in part, a students performance is based on the teachers instruction. And to ensure we are hitting the mark, early on and frequent discussion about grade status can help both the teacher and student know where weaker areas may need more attention.

Barry Westling

Suzanna,
Of course, and students will appreciate the time and effort taken when a teacher shows care and concern for their students in this way.

Barry Westling

Timothy,
I agree, working to improve grades is a good tactic, and the student must know where they stand for that to be effective.

We have an electronic grading system and the students can log in at any time and see their progress. I always have tests/homework/projects graded within 24 hours. There can never be any surprises to the students as to how they are progressing in the course because the grades are right there for them. The program we have also has a GPA calculator for those students that need to maintain a certain GPA becuse they are on academic probation for not making SAP.

Keeping students informed about their progress
in class helps them stay on track and know what
level of work they need to achieve to finish
the course and be successful.

Students want to know how they are doing in class and at what level they are performing. In most cases they already have an idea but want the security of hearing it from the instructor. I generally like to meet with the student one-on-one to review and gives me an opportunity to discuss their challenges or accomplishments.

Nothing could more stressful then a student coming to you at the end of a course and discovering that they are failing the course. Out will come the coulda, shoulda, woulda's. Students need not only the personal satisfaction of knowing that they are doing well, but they need to be aware that their grade is a reflection on the amount of time they dedicate to the course and the degree of their understanding.

So the student can understand where they stand during the course and identify if he/she is at risk for course completion. It also allows the instrcutor to identify at risk students.

students need to be aware of their academic status to ensure they have an opportunity to be sure they are passing.

students need to be aware of their academic status to ensure they have an opportunity to be sure they are passing.

students need to be aware of their academic status to ensure they have an opportunity to be sure they are passing.

So that both you and they know where their strengths and weaknesses are. Giving them the ability to understand how their effort to date is reflecting their grades can help them know if they need to work harder to reach their goals or finish the course with a passing grade.
