I have the opportunity to teach a few different types of classes. I tend to lean toward technology due to the age of my students and their familiarity with computers and video. I do however, make sure that I maximize interaction of discussion and "real life" equipment. I feel that the hands on approach benefits many students by giving them the ability to see and do while hearing and reading the material.
Hi Bruce:
Good idea. All instructors should be comfortable with and use the resources they have available to them. Variety alone won't assure student learning. However, good utilization of resources will contribute an inproved learning environment.
Regards, Barry
I select a media that not only I am comfortable with. That it also fits well with training aids and will be most effective in reaching students in all learning styles.
Hi John:
Even if the curriculum is prepared for you, your creativity in developing effective and interesting delivery methods can contribute to memororable class sessions.
Regards, Barry
It is selected for us. We are required to follow a specific media. However how we present it and the training aids and displays can be adjusted to each individual class.
Hi David:
Great! As a tool, PPT's can add quite a bit. Good instructors will rember that PPT, just like any other presentation component, is just a tool. It should not be the focus. The information is what is important, not the instrument that provides it (unless you're teaching the mechanics of how PowerPoint works I guess!)
Regards, Barry
power point presentations let you use slides and mini-movies that can be projected on a wall large enough for every one to see and let the instructor point out varios items of intrest in great detail while using numerous slides as well as showing real items and can be drawn on to enhance a lesson
Hi Richard:
Media selections are like the tools that help instructors get their job completed in the most effective and interesting manner. You've touched on some combinations incorporate successful lesson presenhtations. Good!
Regards, Barry
Our media and delivery are determined by a predefined curriculum. Although I do tend to present the topic in multiple forms ( i.e. Powerpoint, white board, and hands on to enforce each other.
Hi Donald:
I often tell other instructors that they are the experts. So even though there may be PPT's, existing media or lesson plans, they've hired you because of your unique and specific knowledge. So, that's where you get to shine with "home office" materials. You get to bring the "you" into the classroom!
Regards, Barry
The media type is dictated by the "home office". Cirriculum is preset, as well as the PP material.
All quiz and test questions are derived from the PP material, so deviation from it is not acceptable.
Hi Cindy:
Hands on demo's and similar practical applications will provide the most success in information retention by students. Whenever we can engage or involve a student in an activity they will learn better and retain information longer.
Regards, Barry
Hi Cindy:
You got it. Variety will help involve the bulk of your students because, as you say, there are different dominant learning styles that each student is predisosed to. Regardless of the learning style though, as you say, we want our lessons to be interesting to the degree possible.
Regards, Barry
I usually select the media that will best enhance the particular lesson and best illustrate the points of the lesson in the clearest way possible. I have never used power point and don't know that it would really be a plus for the classes that I teach. I use the white board a lot as well as occasional posters/flash cards. I also like doing hands-on demonstrations.
I agree about using a variety of media. There are four distinct learning styles and having a variety of media in the classroom will ensure that you are reaching each student. Also, keeping the class interesting by using variety will help keep the students from nodding off and not absorbing what they should be. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Right?
Hi Patrick:
Good idea. Some instructors enga=ge their stuidents to make up selected slides for the PPT presentation. This gives the students a sense of contribution and helps solidify the lesson material.
Regards, Barry
Hi Patrick:
Student numbers do play a part in selecting media. If you have the opportunity to make these decisions, activities that involve stuidents will result in better student outcomes.
Regards, Barry
Hi Patrick:
Not all media will reach all of your students. It's good to add variety so that you're capturing most of your students attention with one of the delivery methods you've chosen.
Regards, Barry
This is a very important point to make that we reach the maximum if not all the students.
I chose based on the number of students I have and what is the topic of the class..
