I feel being yourself while instructing is very important. The students come to trust what is real and consitent. Sharing real work experiences to connect meaning to the content is also important. Also, Students are not the only ones learning, instructors learn as well. Students teach us alot about ourselves.
Hi Shantae:
That's true. There ideally needs to be a balance between the passion an instructor feels with keeping emotional intrests low to prevent distracting the student from the main point.

Hi Dennis:
You are describing a great thing here - the use of multiple approaches when teaching new information. The nice thing about that style is it addresses multiple learning styles.

Hi Dennis:
That's true - in fact, ideally, most believe that starting the class a "little" stronger in personality may make for an easier time maintaining control later.
Regards, Barry
Robert, I think so too. Understanding students' interests and learning styles is as important to me as working with my communication style strenghts - maybe more since I can be conciously be flexible. Sarah
Being a "player" and creating a forum for them to see, hear and touch the knowledge is a good deleivery tool. So it is important that you as the teacher can deliever different styles of teaching to meet the differnet learning styles.
The instructor's personality is absolutely key in the delivery of instruction. The manner in which the instructor relates with the students and relays information keeps the students engaged and interested in the topic. It gives them drive and motivation to continue in the class and career field.
You are correct!!! Be yourself and the students will feel your efforts to educated them are genuine.
Me personally when I'm confident about a subject I'm teaching I display a little bit of arrogance while delivering that particular lecture. It's more like no one knows more about this subject than me. It captivates students!!!
I agree 100%, if you are a shy and quiet instructor you may lure your students to sleep. Students trying to stay awake aren't attentive and they will not receive your message.
This varies depending on the type of course being taught, but I feel that my personality is very motivating. This is a necessity in the field I am working in. Each mod requires different speed levels and a time factor is involved. I try and motivate each student to their fullest capacity. They have to compete with themselves mentally and physically. In order to keep them interested daily, I try to exude excitement through my instructions and materials, and, of course, there's always that light at the end of the tunnel -- $$$.
Pretty soon, many of the students pick up on this and move a lot faster than others. So I work on the ones that aren't quite there by implementing different types of testing -- shorter, faster, and w/ special attention where needed. Voila!
Hi Sarrah:
This is so true! Basically, no matter what our comfort level, instructors should try to have a multi-level approach with presenting information so we make sure we address every type of learner.

Hi Susan:
In career based courses, it is an excellent technique to tie-in what ever subject you're discussing to a real world scenario. It makes the topic more relavant to what the student may need to know.

Students can tell when I am stressing a particular point to take note and that it is something that I consider to be an important element in their education. I always give them an example of how it can be of use to them at the moment, as well as in the future.
The instructor's personality is one of tools that we use to bring the information to life.
Our personality plays a huge role in choosing delivery methods; we choose what we are comfortable with. Although it's important to be comfortable and choose those delivery methods that come easy, it's also important to step out of the box and occasionally utilize unfamiliar methods. For example, we might use PowerPoint slides regularly as part of our delivery, but once a week, instead of the routine we choose to use flip charts or an overhead projector.
Delivery is very important, students need to see that you are excited about the material and your excitement or lack of will determine how they receive the information you are giving. Also if you have a class that it hands on students are able to combine cognitive knowledge with physical activity; which enhances learning.
You have to do what works for you and there are multiple ways to emphasize something is IMPORTANT! I try to mix-it-up as much as possible.
I work with an instructor who is a great lady, but whoa, when she is with students, she comes off so brusk and short. I don't think she sees this in herself, but her students and other instructors certainly do. How would you approach this delicate situation??
Hello Denise,
I also like to use personal stories and experiences, especially if they are humorous or clearly illustrate a point I am trying to drive home or one that encourages positive class participation. If it is beneficial to the subject matter, I'm all in!
