I agree. I do the same thing in my technology classes by showing the students how technology has not only changed the world but their fields of study as well.

It is key to the student understanding what is coming. Each step guides them in their recognition of what they have achieved and motivates them toward their next learning objective. It is essential the instructor be in tune with the students by carefully questioning and allowing for discussion in order to assess the righ moment to bridge into the next objective.

Learning objectives are important as it outlines specifically what a student should be able to do, it encourage reflection and provides a good course design and development. Learning objectives also enable good assessment development.

Constructing learning objectives is an important part of instructional planning because it lays a clear outline of the learning activities to follow.

to keep an organized and constantly engaged group of learners, and reduce your own stress, and maintain class control

The objectives allow the students to create goals for time management, the objectives allow students to tie the individual material into their overall goals and the objectives for the course. I consider individual class learning objectives a part of the big puzzle of the course objectives. I also believe that objectives shared for the "next class" tell the students what they will be missing if they do not participate or attend so these objectives need to be selling and good.

I think providing students with learning objectives on a daily basis help the students to understand what exactly will be covered that day as well as how we are going to reinforce those lessons.

Instructional Learning Objectives gives the students an idea of the topics being discussed in the classroom for the day. It gives them the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers from their peers and instructor to add to their knowledge of the subject.

Students need specific goals that need to be achieved by the end of class. It seems that without and end game, the students just seem to drift, nothing seems important.

I think it is important for student success, for future classes as well as the broader understanding of important information that pertains to their chosen field. It helps build the foundation of the students academic intelligence for practical career success.

As a new instructor, I've been constructing lesson plans mostly with the intent of time management and a clear listing of daily class goals in order to keep myself on target. I've been presenting the learning objectives prior to any lecture or activity, but I like the idea (as mentioned in an earlier thread) of linking these two together. Instead of just offering the learning objectives, I'll be more careful to link them to 1) the short term goal of today's class and 2) the big picture. I think this will be more exciting and motivational for the students. Thanks for the tip!

Constructing learning objectives keeps an instructor on track with the information the students need to learn for the day. Without them students may not learn what they need and the learning may get off track from what is required by the curriculum.

I agree, the students should be informed of what is going on and they like to be prepared for what is coming up. It is our responsibility as instructors to provide the student with all necessary aspects to succeed.

Constructing good and detailed learning objectives gives the students a positive path which leads to a positive outcome. I do not know many individuals that can make positive progress from a chaotic or vague expectation.

The students need to know what they are going to learn. You as an instructor need to understand and make this clear.

It is very important. on our school we display the objetives on the board for the students to know what is the plan and objetive for the day and also we display the plan for next class

Because learning objectives communicate what the instructor is trying to teach; what the students are to be expected to be able to do; how their achievement will be measured; and what will be accepted as evidence that they have achieved the goals.

I think its important because its shows the students what they will be learning and what is required of them.

It's the road map to the destination; the better the map, the more likely to reach the destination without detours.

Kathleen,

Most institutions have standardized learning objectives. Does your institution allow you to edit or change course learning objectives?
